Zamioculcas (Dollar Tree) home growing and care

Our tips will be useful to owners of zamioculcas, as well as to those who are still planning to have a “money” pet. You will be convinced that this plant does not demand difficult leaving. And we will show you how to create favorable conditions for him.

Zamioculcas stands out among other houseplants with its neat crown, impressive size and rich green color of leaves. But they love him not only for their spectacular appearance. Among flower growers, there is a belief that Zamioculcas helps its owners attract dollars. Therefore, along with the fat girl (money tree), he took pride of place in many houses.

Meanwhile, not everyone knows how to properly care for the plant. Usually, it all comes down to the fact that zamioculcas is unpretentious. But there are some features in the care of him.

Zamioculcas - plant description

Do you know plants like monstera, dieffenbachia, syngonium or anthurium? So Zamioculcas is a close relative of them and also belongs to the Aroid family. As a houseplant, it began to be grown only at the end of the last century. A wild relative of Zamioculcas, originally from tropical Africa, was first described in the first half of the XIX century.

Zamioculcas got its name from similarities with the zamia plant from the genus Cygnus. By the way, zamia is common in America, on another continent, and it is also grown at home.

In room culture, the Zamioculcas zamelifolia species is common (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

What is the plant so attracted florists? If you look at it carefully, you will notice that zamioculcas is very unusual. Its thick stems are densely covered with glossy leathery leaves, sometimes reminiscent of a luxurious fan. The tubers of the plant are dense, but fragile. A dollar tree blooms very rarely and only in adulthood. The flower resembles an ear of corn, rather unprepossessing and short-lived. So they grow the plant more for the sake of greenery.

All parts of the plant can accumulate moisture, so zamioculcas tolerates drought perfectly. But the better the growing conditions of the flower, the more juicy and bright it will be.

Zamioculcas contains poisonous juice, which can be dangerous for children, animals and allergy sufferers. Transplant, pruning, propagation of the flower spend in gloves. Make sure that the juice does not get on the skin and mucous membranes. In case of contact, rinse thoroughly with water.

What to do with zamioculcas after purchase

To preserve the decorative appearance of zamioculcas, you need to properly care for it from the time of purchase. Despite the temptation to immediately transplant the plant into a beautiful flowerpot, do not rush, but let the flower get used to new conditions. By the way, it is better to buy a plant in the warm season, so that it does not freeze on the way home.

When the plant has settled in a new room, after about 2-4 weeks, you can carefully transfer it into a pot with an old earthen lump, and fill the gaps with fresh soil. So you reduce the stress of the procedure.

Choose a transshipment pot according to the size of the plant. The diameter of the new container should be 3-4 cm larger than the previous one. Ceramic and clay pots are suitable. Plastic is better not to use, because plant roots can break through them. The ideal form of the pot is narrowed down. The container must have openings for water drainage.

Some flower growers, on the contrary, prefer plastic containers, because it is difficult to extract a plant from ceramic in the future. If you also like pots made of plastic, feel free to use them for transshipment. Just make sure that the plant does not grow very much, and in time carry out a new transshipment.

To make the dollar tree recover faster after transplanting, adhere to the following rules:

  • use light and fertile soil
  • make sure to drain using expanded clay, clay shards or broken brick,
  • do not completely bury the roots in the soil, they should protrude about 1 cm above the soil surface,
  • Do not brush off the soil with an earthen coma.

Be sure to wear gloves during operation. Zamioculcas juice is poisonous.

Immediately after the procedure, you can not water the plant, otherwise it will die. Do this after about 7-10 days, when Zamioculcas adapts to the new pot. The first watering should completely wet the earthen lump. Drain the water in the pan. Next time water the flower when the soil dries well.

Features of growing Zamioculcas at home

The conditions for growing a dollar tree are quite simple. You will find the basic information in our infographic. Save it to always have at hand!

Zamiokulkas loves light and warmth, so it will feel good on the western or eastern windowsills and balconies. You can put a flower on the south side, but then provide it with a good shade so that the leaves do not appear burns. The plant will survive on the northern windowsill, in the shade, but may lose its rich green color. In summer, she will “relax” with pleasure in the garden or on the veranda. In winter, Zamiokulkas often lacks light, so allocate a place for him on the lightest window sill.

How to water Zamioculcas

Water Zamioculcas sparingly. The main rule: it is better not to top up than to pour. From spring to autumn, make sure that the water does not stagnate in the sump. In winter, water the plant as the soil dries to avoid rotting of the tuber and roots. Water only with warm, settled water, as Zamioculcas does not like cold and even cool.

Despite the fact that zamioculcus stores water, you should not dry it too much, otherwise the plant will drop its tips and lose its decorative appearance. Prolonged aridity can also cause damage to the spider mite.

Dust the leaves as necessary with a cloth or once a month arrange a warm shower Zamioculcas

As for spraying, they can only be carried out at very high air temperatures. At other times, doing this is undesirable, so as not to provoke yellowing of the leaves. To increase humidity, it is better to spray air around the flower or put a container of water next to it.

How to feed Zamioculcas

The dollar tree quickly picks up nutrients from the soil and gratefully responds to regular feeding. During the growth period, from April to September, 1-2 procedures per month are sufficient. From October to March, you do not need to fertilize the plant. The basic rule of top dressing is the same as when watering: less is better than more.

Use ready-made store preparations, for example, universal ones or for cacti and succulents. Zamiokulkasu enough half the concentration of the solution. Watering under the root. Also, once a month, you can spray the flower with a solution of urea (1 g per 1 liter of water).

If you have just transplanted a young plant, do not feed it until new leaves appear.

How to crop zamioculcas

Despite its slow growth, zamioculcas needs regular crown formation and thinning. Otherwise, part of the leaves will receive less light and turn yellow. Bare branches will not add a decorative flower. And if you regularly trim, you will get a luxurious green decoration for the interior.

Pruning should be done in spring or summer, but not in winter, when the tree is at rest. Dry and diseased parts of the plant, thickening stems and individual leaves are subject to removal. When transplanting, also trim part of the roots.

For work, you need a disinfected sharp secateurs or a short knife. Scissors will not work, because they wet the plant tissue. After the procedure, dry the slices and sprinkle with crushed charcoal.

When removing the stems, leave the stumps on the surface of the soil, do not break them, otherwise damage the tuber and roots. You can remove these stumps during the next transplant and division of zamioculcas.

How to transplant Zamioculcas

Like any other indoor plant, a dollar tree also needs regular transplanting. Young specimens are transplanted annually, adults - as the roots grow, every 3-4 years. As soon as they come out of the drainage holes - it's time to transplant. If the plant is very old and large, it is enough once a year to replace the topsoil with fresh. But you need to do this carefully so as not to damage the root system.

The ideal time for transplanting Zamioculcas is spring. But if necessary, you can carry out work at other times of the year.

The tubers of the dollar tree are fragile, so the transplant most often represents a transshipment with an earthen lump. Make up the rest of the soil from equal parts of turf, leaf, peat soil and sand. Add humus if possible. Choose a pot 3-4 cm wider than the previous one. Be sure to drain.

The progress of the transplant is as follows:

  • put on household gloves (you remember that zamioculcas juice is poisonous!),
  • gently remove the plant and inspect the roots,
  • cut soft rotten parts of the roots with scissors,
  • if the bush has grown greatly, divide the tubers and plant them in different containers, thereby you will rejuvenate the plant,
  • remove the stumps remaining after trimming,
  • pour soil into the bottom of the new pot and put a flower in it,
  • fill in the gaps between the walls of the pot and the plant, compact the soil,
  • Do not deeply bury the tubers, let them protrude about 1 cm above the surface of the soil,
  • Do not water the plant for 7-10 days, then water it so that the entire earthen lump is saturated with water, and drain excess water from the pan.

After transplanting, the dollar tree needs time to adapt. Since the flower already grows slowly, after the procedure its development will slow down even more, but do not worry. Zamioculcas will soon get used to the new conditions and will surely release new leaflets.

Zamioculcas - origin and related plants

Among professional plant growers, Dutch masters have been occupying the leader position for many years, who have not only mastered the rules for caring for already known plants and flowers, but also regularly introduce new varieties that delight users around the world. Zamioculcas came to Europe thanks to Dutch plant growers who brought him here from Africa. The birthplace of this plant is Kenya, where temperature, humidity and climate actively contribute to the growth and life of this plant.

The closest related plants of Zamioculcas, which are widely known in our country, are:

All these plants are united by the fact that they have tubers or the root system, which effectively accumulates and retains moisture, as a result of which the plants can remain alive and fresh, even with occasional watering.

In our area, Zamioculcas is better known as the “dollar tree”, which is due to the similarity of the flower with the redgrass, called the “money tree” or financial stability, which supposedly occurs in the life of the owner of the plant, after its acquisition. Zamiokulkas today is a great and meaningful present, which will be appreciated by business people and housewives.

Zamioculcas zamielistny (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

Or Zamioculcas loddigesii (Zamioculcas loddigesii) - this species can be found in natural conditions in East Africa. Rhizome is a tuber, from which leaf plates grow, reaching a length of about 0.6 m. Leaf plates are divided into leaflets-feathers, which number from 4 to 6 pairs. During prolonged drought, the plant can drop leaves from the top of the leaf plate, thereby reducing moisture evaporation.

Zamioculcas variegate

Variegate or variegated zamioculcas is very difficult to find in flower shops. His homeland is the island of Madagascar. At home, it can reach a height of 1 to 1.5 meters. Leaves are arranged symmetrically in strict order. They have a bright green color, juicy flesh, pointed at the tips. The flowers of the plant rarely appear, in the presence of very good care. The inflorescence is formed in the form of an ears.

Zamioculcas lanceolate (Zamioculcas Lanceolata)

Got this name because of the elongated leaves of the original lanceolate shape. For the first time, a flower was put up at flower auctions in Holland in the late 20th century. Its height reached 1.5 meters and above. In 2007, a miniature plant was bred, not exceeding 60 centimeters in height. Its leaves are an exact copy of the ancestor, only in a reduced size.

Black Zamioculcas (Zamioculcas Blak)

The plant has leaves and cuttings of almost black color. Otherwise, it is completely similar to zamiokulkas zamifolia. The same fleshy, pointed at the tips of the leaves, fixed symmetrically on both sides on a common handle. The young bush has lettuce leaves. As they grow older they begin to darken. At the same time, their color is completely not affected by the lighting in the room. No matter how the florist tries to lighten the leaves, he will not succeed. Such a “tree” looks very impressive. Therefore, it will perfectly decorate any room.

Illumination

Zamiokulkas well tolerates direct rays of the sun, in this regard, it can be put on the window of the southern orientation. However, in the summer with a lack of fresh air in the afternoon, the plant is recommended to shade. It also grows normally and develops on the bright window sills of western or eastern orientation. A flower you’ve recently purchased at a store is taught to the direct rays of the sun gradually, otherwise burns may form on the surface of the foliage. The same thing is done after prolonged cloudy weather.

Meet the "Zamiya"

Zamiokulkas is a monotypic genus of plants of the Aroid family, represented by the only species Zamiokulkas, myeloid. The flower’s homeland is the desert expanses of tropical Africa, where it grows with other succulent plants that can store moisture in the fleshy stems, leaves and roots that these plants use during the drought period.

Dollar Tree Care

There are no special difficulties in the care of Zamioculcus. Here are the highlights.

  • Moderate temperature, preferably in winter +16. + 18 ° С, but not lower than + 12 ° С. A bright place with diffused light suits him.

  • I stand the plant in summer to fresh air - on the street, in the gazebo. In winter I rearrange it closer to the window.

  • Watering prefers moderate from spring to autumn, but at the same time water should not remain in the pan, but watering is rare in winter, the soil should dry well until the next. Zamioculcas tolerates some overdrying easier than stagnation of water in the soil - this can lead to rotting of the roots and the formation of stem rot.

From spring to autumn, zamioculcas prefers moderate watering

  • Zamioculcas does not require leaf spraying, but sometimes I wash him so that the plant does not become dusty and does not lose its attractiveness. In the summer in the open air there is enough rain washings.

  • April to August I feed fertilizers every two weeks, since zamioculcas quickly consumes nutrients. You can use fertilizers for cacti and succulents. In the dormant period (in winter) I do not feed at all.

When transplanting the plant can not be deeply buried

  • Zamioculcas grows slowly, therefore often it’s better not to transplant, but still, when filling the roots of the entire space of the pot, a transplant to a larger volume is very desirable. When transplanting the tubers do not need to be deepened deepThey should be slightly visible on the surface. I transplanted my zamioculcases in the spring, I used the nutrient soil. For young plants, I took one part of turf, leaf, peat soil and one part of sand. You can add a little rotten humus earth. Transplantation of old specimens must be carried out every two years in the spring.

  • Zamioculcas pot must be proportionate to the root system. Good drainage is required.

The pot for zamioculcas must be proportionate to the root system

  • Zamioculcas propagated both by seeds and vegetatively. For vegetative propagation, you can use all parts of the plant. The simplest option is the division of an adult plant.

  • Zamioculcas rarely sick and affected by pests. This is a very hardy plant, but it can also be ruined by inept care. Biggest mistake - excessive watering. In this case, the roots begin to rot. If such a disaster has occurred, the plant must be taken out of the pot, the decayed parts separated, and the remaining part sprinkled with powdered charcoal, dried and transplanted into new soil, henceforth, water the flower very moderately.

Important! Zamioculcas is a poisonous plant. Care must be taken when transplanting, pruning cuttings and leaves, and especially when dividing tubers. Zamioculcus juice should not be allowed to enter the skin and mucous membranes - they cause a very strong burning sensation and require immediate, plentiful washing with running water. Work only with gloves.

Description

The flower has several branches — feathers on a short stalk, growing from a tuber and strewn with shiny leathery leaves. In tubers, a flower stores water in reserve. The bush itself is low, with careful care grows up to 1 meter.

Zamioculcas bloom is very rare and inconspicuous, a cob of light cream hue is hidden among the green foliage.

The main room varieties

An unusual plant became known recently, only at the end of the last century. During this time, he was so fond of plant breeders that breeders began to develop new forms of plants.

ViewDescription
Small-leavedThe first known form, propagated by Dutch breeders, came from South Africa, where it was discovered in the middle of the XIX century. In addition, this species grows well on the island of Madagascar. For small, shiny leaves, flower lovers have been given a sonorous name — a dollar tree, popular — Lodges. The plant develops slowly, forming a lush bush 1 m high, very easy to care for, it is deservedly popular for decorating various rooms, including office ones.
Lanceolate (Zamioculcas lanceolata)It was found in Mozambique in the early twentieth century. Its long branches are covered with elongated leaves. The bush itself is stretched to a height of 1.5 m.
Boiavin (Boivinii Decne)Also from South Africa. There it is also called the "Zanzibar Pearl", and in our country - "Feminine Happiness." Its leathery leaves have a smooth smooth edge. Despite the large tuber, it is very hygroscopic and does not tolerate drought, prefers moist air and requires spraying.
Variegate or variegated (Zamioculcas variegate)Originally from Madagascar. The species attracts attention with leaves of various spotty colors with white or beige stains, arranged in strict geometric sequence. Due to its exotic nature, sale is very rare.
Black (Zamioculcas Blak)The young plant has an ordinary color, but darkens with age, increased illumination does not affect the color of the leaves, they become consistent with their name.
ZamicroA miniature view introduced in the last decade for small rooms. The dwarf flower grows quickly, its branches reach a length of 60 cm, increasing to 6-8 in a year. A compact plant can be placed in an apartment on a small window.

How to propagate zamioculcas

Zamioculcas can be propagated by any vegetative method: dividing the bush, cuttings or leaves. There is also a method of seed propagation, but it is rarely practiced in indoor floriculture. The easiest way to split a dollar tree is when transplanting. A little more time will be needed to root the cuttings.

Also for reproduction, you can take a healthy shoot, which remained after pruning. Put it in water, wait until the roots appear, and then transplant into the soil.

The most difficult way is leaf propagation, as it will take about a year before the advent of new leaves. After separating the sheet from the trunk, put it in a cup of wet sand and cover with a transparent container, making a greenhouse. During this period, the leaf should grow roots. As soon as they appear, transplant it into the soil and wait for the appearance of new leaves.

Features of planting and transplanting Zamioculcas, soil and pot requirements

After the transplant, the root system should develop in the tank 2-3 cm more than it. It is very good if the pot is made of clay, it lets air through. In a plastic pot, moisture stagnation is possible, in which case the root may rot and the plant will die.

There must be holes at the bottom of the container, then plastic and glass flower beds can be used.

Zamioculcas will develop well in a low flowerpot if the roots reach the walls of the vessel. Dwarf plants look very good in tall pots in the form of a vase, and large specimens in low and wide.

A small rooted seedling is transplanted into a small container and transplanted annually as it develops. Developed bushes are transferred from the pot to another once every five years.

This must be done with great care so as not to harm the fragile roots. At the same time, the old soil does not change. Carefully remove the plant from the previous container on the litter, in a new one - lay the drainage, and then place the flower. Fresh soil is poured around the tuber so that it rises slightly above the ground.

The best transplant period is considered spring or autumn. A newly purchased plant is transplanted one month after acquisition.

Zamioculcas diseases and pests

Zamioculcas - the plant is very hardy, so diseases and pests infect it quite rarely. Most often, the cause of the problem is improper agricultural technology (for example, if you watered the plant too often) or adverse external factors (if the dollar tree spent the whole summer in the garden and was infected by pests from other crops).

If you notice changes in the appearance of the flower in time, it can still be saved. Try to regularly inspect the leaves of Zamioculcus, they will tell you if something went wrong. The most common problem is yellowing of the leaves of a dollar tree. The reasons and methods for solving it we have put together in one table.

Why do the leaves of Zamioculcas turn yellowWhat to do
Waterlogging of the earth (leaves turn yellow and then brown, roots soften)Immediately transplant the plant into fresh soil. First remove all rotted parts and treat the slices with powdered charcoal or a weak solution of potassium permanganate
WaterloggingStop spraying, ventilate the room regularly, or transfer the flower to another room
Temperature differences (also root shoots rot and dry)Spend processing Kornevin. If the room temperature is low - protect the plant from drafts, high - put a container of water near the pot
Lack of feedingGradually introduce top dressing with ready-made preparations, for example, fertilizer Agricola. Just do not exceed the dosage, otherwise the condition of the weakened plant may worsen
No croppingTrim the overgrown side shoots, remove the yellow leaves. Plant transplantation into a larger pot and regular feeding will also help.

The lower leaves of an adult Zamioculcus yellow with time and die. This is a natural aging process, so do not worry.

One of the causes of yellowing of the leaves may be the presence of pests: aphids, spider mites, mealybugs or scale insects.

If you find pests on the zamioculcus, isolate it immediately from other indoor plants to avoid a mass epidemic.

When growing Zamioculcas, you may encounter other problems. For example, spots on the leaves indicate that the plant has cooled in a draft or received a sunburn. It is enough to remove aggressive environmental factors, and Zamioculcas will feel better.

If the stalk begins to rot, the plant is overflowed and its tubers are most likely to have suffered very much. In this case, you will have to throw it away, but you can still try to root living leaves from the top and grow a new zamioculcas.

If zamioculcas lost the aerial part, do not rush to throw it away. Inspect the tuber, and if it looks good, soak it in a weak solution of potassium permanganate and plant it in fresh soil. The plant will surely survive and start new shoots. The main thing - do not water it too often and protect it from drafts.

Zamiokulkas in interior phytodesign

Dollar tree is successfully used for landscaping residential premises and offices. This tall beautiful plant immediately attracts attention. It is worth arranging zamioculcas so that it is convenient to admire it. The flower can reach a height of 1 m. Therefore, unlike other indoor plants, it rarely fits on the windowsill due to the massive crown.

It is best to place zamioculcas separately from other plants. As a tapeworm, it will look great on the floor or table. If you are looking for a tall plant for phytocomposition, zamioculcas is also a suitable option. Place it next to other large plants: palm, fern, orchid, sansevieria, philodendron. Zamioculcases planted in pots of different sizes look original.

See in our slideshow how you can nicely arrange flowerpots with zamioculcas in your home interior.

Watering

From spring to the end of autumn, watering a dollar tree is carried out only after the soil in the pot is half dry. At other times, watering should be more scarce and rarer. The same regime of watering the flower is necessary for prolonged cloudy weather. If the room is cooler than necessary, then the substrate is moistened only after it is completely dry. During prolonged droughts, the top of the leaf blades dries.

Water the flower with soft and well-settled water (at least 24 hours). Make sure that throughout the year the liquid does not stagnate in the root system of the plant.

Necessary conditions for cultivation

For effective flower care at home, you should follow simple rules.

ParametersSpring SummerAutumn winter
Location / LightingBrightly lit balcony or garden.Highly lit and warm rooms.
Temperature+ 21 ... + 29 ° С+ 15 ... + 18 ° С
Humidity / Watering1-2 times in 2 weeks.Once a month with warm, settled water.
Top dressingTwice a month with fertilizer for cacti or succulents.Fertilizers to exclude.

Pruning

With an incorrectly formed bush, the plant requires pruning, which is carried out in the spring. The growth point is removed, after it irregular side shoots growing up are removed. Gradually, the plant is given a spherical shape, in which case all branches will receive enough light, sun and nutrition, and it will be magnificent and even.

Air humidity

A dollar tree, grown in room conditions, grows well with low humidity, which is typical for living rooms. In this regard, it is not necessary to moisten the foliage. However, on hot summer days, it is recommended to wipe the leaves regularly with a moistened sponge or spray with warm water from a spray bottle.

Seeds

Finding seeds is almost impossible. But if you are lucky and will be presented with seeds from Africa, then the cultivation scheme is as follows:

  • Seeds are laid out in moist soil (soil for cacti or succulents) at a distance of 2-3 cm, then sprinkled on top of the ground.
  • A film is pulled over the container, which is raised for ventilation once a day.
  • For 2-3 months, they monitor the soil moisture, avoiding overmoistening and drying out, if necessary, spray.

First, a tuber is formed, from which a germ grows. When two true leaves appear, they are planted in small containers.

Cuttings

The propagation method is used for propagation in late spring or early summer. A part of the leaf is taken with two oppositely arranged leaves from the mother plant that has reached 5-6 years of age. From a young plant or just bought cuttings practically do not take root:

  • Using a sharp knife, cut a piece of branch.
  • Within 2-3 hours, allow the slice to dry (cork).
  • 1/3 a small capacity by drainage, and then by soil for growing violets or succulents. It is also rooted in a glass of water at room temperature with the addition of crushed tablets of activated carbon or potassium permanganate.
  • Having dusted the cut of the cuttings with the root stimulant, it is buried in the ground to a depth of 2-3 mm, carefully pressing it with soil.
  • For good rooting, the cuttings require warm earth, temperature + 22 ... + 25 ° C and humidity 70-75%.
  • Seedlings are covered with a film. As the soil dries up, it is slightly sprayed with a solution of the root stimulant.
  • Watering is increased after 2 weeks, when the first roots begin to grow.
  • After 7-8 weeks with the appearance of nodules, the plant is rearranged in a bright place and begin to care like an adult plant.
  • New leaves will appear in 5-6 months.

Leaf

Leaf propagation method is very long. No more than 3 pieces can grow during the year.

The larger the selected leaf, the sooner a new plant will grow.

Step by step:

  • The selected sheet is cut with a disinfected knife at an angle of 45 °. The cut day is dried before capping.
  • The lower third of the sheet is powdered with crushed activated carbon mixed with a root activator.
  • When rooted in water, leaves give weak nodules. They recommend planting them in a mixture of peat and sand at a ratio of 50:50, deepening by 1/3 of the height.
  • The leaves covered with a film contain at a temperature of + 22 ... + 25 ° C, arranging daily ventilation.
  • Within 2-3 months, small nodules should form, and the leaves should dry.
  • The first real sheet will appear in 5-6 months. Then you should plant the young plant in small pots with good drainage. The diameter of the new containers is 7-10 cm.

Tubers

It is used for transshipment from mid-April to mid-September. For this method, only adult domestic plants are used if they have two growth points. Otherwise, they do not risk a bush.

Step-by-step instruction:

  • The tuber is dried for 2-3 days.
  • A drainage layer to a height of 1/3 is laid on the bottom of the container with a diameter of 10-12 cm, and on top is a mixture consisting of the same amount of leafy, fertile sod land, peat and sand with the addition of 5% fine expanded clay and humus.
  • Cut tubers with a growth point are buried in the ground by 3-5 cm.
  • They take care of an adult plant, but do not feed it, but only spray it.
  • The first fertilizer is possible only after 4-6 weeks.
  • Only 2-3 leaves grow per year. After that, the plant is planted in the ground and grown as an adult.

Possible growing difficulties, diseases, pests

Zemiokulkas is an unpretentious plant, but various troubles can occur with it. With improper care, his appearance worsens and then measures should be taken.

Manifestations on the leaves, other symptomsCauseRemedy
Leaves grow smaller, turn yellow, dry tips form.Bad light.Put the plant in a well-lit place.
The falling of the upper leaves.Lack of watering or its excess.Adjust watering.
Blackening with tubers. At low temperatures and high humidity, rot develops.Increase the temperature of the plant while drying the soil.
The appearance of dark spots.Abundant watering with high humidity and low temperature.Place the plant in a warm place, reduce watering and even out soil moisture.

A dollar tree can be affected by pests:

At the beginning of the disease, treatment with chemicals once every 2 weeks:

  • Fundazole (1 g per 1 liter of water),
  • Speed (1 ml per 2-4 liters of water),
  • Oksikhom (4 g per 2 liters of water).

In case of serious damage should be transplanted into new, previously cultivated land.

Systematic inspection of the leaves from the back.

Periodic processing of flowers with a soap solution. Soil till use by roasting in an oven and pouring boiling water over it.

Thoroughly wash each leaf with soapy water. Before the final destruction of pests, the processing of one of the chemicals:

To control pests, you can use folk remedies:

  • 40 g of tobacco per 1 liter of water,
  • 30 g grated garlic or 20 g onion in 1 liter of water,
  • Boil 5-6 pods of red hot pepper for 1 hour in 1 liter of water.

Insist a day. Any means is treated 2-3 times with an interval of several days. You can also crush 1/3 of the cockroach control pencil, dissolve in 0.5 l of warm water and spray the soil and plant until the pests are completely destroyed.

Types of Zamioculcas

Zamiokulkas came to us from South Africa. It mainly grows in the tropics and subtropics. All types of zamioculcas, as a rule, have tubers or elongated dense roots.

It belongs to the Aroid family, as well as Aglaonema, Spathiphyllum, Calla, Philodendron and others. Aroid ones are a large family of more than 3,000 species of plants.

Consider the 5 most famous types of zamioculcas, which are most often grown at home, in botanical gardens and greenhouses:

  1. amorous
  2. lanceolate
  3. the black
  4. purple
  5. variegated (variegated)

Amyloid Zamioculcas

It is this species that is popularly called the "Dollar Tree".

He came to us from Eastern Africa. Appearance is very attractive, it is so “perfect and polished” that resembles artificial flowers.

  • Leaflets are smooth, with a glossy sheen and fairly dense.
  • Roots are juicy, underground tubers that are located next to the surface of the earth.
  • Thickened, erect leaves - cuttings grow from the roots.
  • On the cuttings are oval leaves with pointed tips that grow symmetrically.

With proper care, the plant periodically blooms with small creamy flowers - cobs with a soft green veil. The flower itself is located in the lower part of the plant and is often covered with a leaf from above, which is a kind of protection from the adverse environment.

Lanceolate Zamioculcas

The main feature of this species is the elongated leaf shape with a strong glossy finish. The plant looks like 100% artificial. Leaves can reach 1 m in length.

There is artificially deduced, its miniature variety. Such Zamiokulkas grows in height no more than 60 cm. Thanks to its small size, it has become a favorite when decorating offices and other public spaces.

Mr. Summer resident tells: signs and superstitions

A lot of money and superstitions are associated with Zamioculcas; for this, the flower was called the dollar tree.

During watering on Tuesday on the growing moon, a flower is asked to increase well-being. For irrigation use money water prepared by insisting of coins for several days.

The plant is transplanted only to the growing Moon, so that it gives an increase in prosperity, and according to the teachings of Feng Shui, houses are located in the southeast. To enhance monetary energy, a red thread is tied to its trunk, and a dollar bill curled up in a cone is placed. The top of the pyramid is fixed on the flower and made sure that it does not fall.

Variegate (variegated) Zamioculcas

In nature, found on the island of Madagascar. This is a rare species and is difficult to find on sale. Most often it can be seen in the botanical garden or at a private collector.

  • The leaves are bright, due to the complex color, in which all shades of white, milky and green are found.
  • In wild conditions and in large greenhouses, it can grow up to 1.5 meters in height.
  • Flowering is not frequent, and only with proper care.

Zamioculcas care at home

This is a picky plant that does not require much attention. Nevertheless, there are some features that you need to know and observe at all stages of development. Then the plant will delight with its healthy appearance, glossy sheen of succulent green leaves and, possibly, exotic flowering.

TIP

Leaves can be wiped with a special liquid to shine the leaves.

Such drugs are sold in garden stores.

How to water and spray

Watering is moderate in the spring and summer. Do not allow the earthen coma to dry out completely and for a long time, otherwise the leaves will begin to turn yellow at the edges and the plant will lose its decorative appearance. In winter and early spring we reduce watering.

Zamioculcas, like all succulents, tolerates a slight “drought”, as in nature they have adapted to accumulate moisture in their dense leaves.

IMPORTANT

Do not allow the soil to dry out or overflow.

Water Zamioculcas only as the topsoil dries.

Where to put

A pot with a dollar tree should be located in the warmest and brightest place. Ideal for the southern, western or eastern windowsill.

He does not like drafts. But it does not tolerate stagnation of air. The room should be well ventilated, but so that a strong stream of air does not get on the plant itself.

In summer, it is desirable to take the plant outside, but there it needs to provide shading. In the sun in a pot, the earth dries very quickly, and the plant may lose its attractiveness.

  • In spring and summer, the ideal ambient temperature for Zamiokulkas is +21 - +26 ° C.
  • In winter, he feels well at +16 - +18 ° C.

Feeding and backup

Zamioculcas need to be fed during the period of active growth. from April to August.

  • Fertilizers can be taken universal for all crops or special for cacti and succulents.
  • Frequency of top dressing 1 time in 2 weeks, in the evening.
  • The soil in the pot must be moist so that the roots do not burn.

Over the years, the plant becomes simply huge and needs special supports. The support may be a bamboo stick or in the form of a ring of metal or plastic.

Landing and transplanting

Determining if your plant needs a transplant is very simple. Look at the bottom of the pot, if roots have appeared from the drainage holes, you need to reload and transplant. Tubers can also break the pot around the perimeter or deform it. In this case, a transplant is also required.

  • A transplant or transshipment of a plant must be done in the spring-summer period.
  • Young plants need replanting annually.
  • Starting from 4-5 years of age, Zamioculcas is transplanted every 2 to 3 years.

When transplanting the tubers we do not deepen, but place them at a depth of 4 - 5 cm from the surface.

TIP

If the room does not allow to place a large bush of zamioculcas,
you can hold back its growth.

A plant transplant should be done rarely and not planted in a large pot.

Priming

The soil must be nutritious and loose. A mixture for planting is best done by yourself, since they do not sell ready-made soil for zamioculcas.

To do this, take 1 part of the finished purchased soil, garden or forest land, add the same part of the washed river sand, and add 3 parts of crushed charcoal to them. Mix everything thoroughly.

At the bottom we lay a layer of drainage, which should take 1/3 of the height of the pot.

Pot

A pot for planting can be taken from any material, but it is best to give preference to clay. It is heavy and will not allow a large bush to topple to the floor.

  • Choose tall and deep pots.
  • At the bottom there should be large holes to drain excess water.
  • The new pot should be 2 to 3 fingers larger than the previous one.

IMPORTANT

Do not plant a young plant immediately in a large pot.

Zamioculcas will start to grow tubers,
and lush aerial shoots will have to wait several years.

Care problems

Often a plant loses its decorative effect as a result of mechanical influences. It is quite fragile and it is easy to break sheet platinum or the tip of the sheet.

With insufficient lighting, the zamioculcas extends and becomes weakened.

Dark spots on the tips of the leaves appear from low temperatures and high humidity, as well as from drafts.

Falling of the lower foliage of a plant is a normal phenomenon and does not require adjustment in care.

If the roots are rotten

Rotting of roots and leaves can occur at low temperature and high humidity.

Overflowing plants is also fraught with rotting of tubers. If this happens, you need to dig out the roots, rinse in water, cut off the sore spot with a sharp, disinfected knife, allow the cut to dry for several minutes, so that a protective film appears on the surface, and then cover with green paint.

Very well, the plant responds to a warm shower and spraying. But remember that after such procedures, drops remain on the leaves, which, after drying, spoil the appearance. Swipe the drops with a cotton cloth.

Propagation by division of roots

The division of tubers almost always takes place with damage. Since the roots are very fused together, and it’s very difficult to break them with your hands.

  • A sharp, sanitized knife is used for division.
  • Sprinkle the formed slices with chopped activated or charcoal and slightly dry the cut.

Zamioculcas transplant

A transplant is recommended only if necessary in spring or summer. As a rule, it is done once every 2-4 years. With rare transplants, bush growth can be slowed down. For transplantation, it is recommended to use a high clay pot. If the capacity is taken too wide, then the first time will be the development of the root system, and at the same time, the growth of the aerial part will greatly slow down. And in a too large pot there is a chance of stagnation of the liquid in the soil mixture. For transplantation, a substrate of the following composition is used: sand, garden, garden and forest soil (5: 2: 2: 2). You can also pour a small amount of charcoal into the prepared soil mixture. Do not forget to make a good drainage layer at the bottom of the pot, which should occupy at least ¼ of the container.

Bloom

In indoor conditions, zamioculcas rarely blooms. To do this, you need to create optimal conditions for him, one of the main is to observe the temperature regime in the winter.

If all goes well, the plant will delight you with flowering.

The inflorescence is not quite ordinary - it is an ear of corn, white in color with a yellowish tinge, bordered by a greenish veil.

The bud comes from the base of the flower, from the earth itself, just like the leaves. From a botanical point of view, the structure of the flower is very interesting. The upper part of the cob consists only of male flowers, and the bottom is only of female flowers. Moreover, they are separated by several rows of sterile flowers. It is clear that with this arrangement, self-pollination of the plant is impossible.

Pollination

Under natural conditions, pollination is most likely caused by insects. Naturally, in the room the flower remains dustless.

If you really want to get Zamioculcas seeds at home, you can try to pollinate it manually. To do this, take a soft brush and gently transfer pollen from the pistils of male flowers to the stigmas of women.

Propagation at home

Zamioculcas is most often propagated by division during transplantation. The tubers are peeled and gently separated from each other. Each leaflet should have a leaf with a kidney and several roots.

Young plants are planted in separate small shallow pots. For the first time after planting, care for them consists only in very limited watering. The first top dressing is introduced only after a new young leaf appears.

Zamioculcus pests

The plant is rarely affected by insects, apparently due to the thick glossy skin covering the leaves.

Of the pests of Zamioculcas, there are sometimes:

  • The spider mite, the appearance of which provokes too dry air, manifests itself in the form of a thin white spider web in the internodes, with a severe defeat, the leaves of the zamioculcus wither, become yellow and crumble. To destroy the pest, the leaves are wiped with a soapy sponge, sprayed with a weak tobacco infusion, after which the plant is washed under a warm shower. If these measures do not help, use ready-made insecticides (Akarin, Anticlesch, etc.) according to the manufacturer's instructions. You can also pollinate the flower with ground sulfur, but they do it only outside the living quarters,
  • Scabies, which can fall on succulents from neighboring plants. Insects are hardly noticeable at first, but quickly multiply, while the stems and leaves are covered with dark spots. Adult individuals are inactive, they are removed with a wet sponge, larvae are destroyed by spraying the entire plant with a soap solution or insecticides, for example, actar.
  • Aphids often appear if the plant is exposed to the open air for the summer. Affected leaves curl, discolor, then turn yellow and fall. It is destroyed by ready-made insect repellents such as decis, intavir, actellik or phytoerm.
  • Thrips, often moving from neighboring plants, with silver lesions appearing on the leaves, stems bend, and traces of excrement visible. To destroy this persistent pest, repeated treatment with insecticides (intavir, karate, actellik, karbofos, etc.) is used.
  • Mealybugs that infect plants in conditions of too dry air, large enough pests, visible to the naked eye, suck out juices from leaves and young shoots, as a result of which the flower lags in growth, leaves are deformed and fall off, leaving sugary cotton-like secretions on which they settle in further sooty fungi. With a mild form of damage, insects are mechanically removed with a wet sponge moistened with a soap or alcohol solution, in more complex cases, they are treated with pesticides (intavir, decis, actelik, etc.). Sometimes you have to try several drugs to choose the most effective.

After any insecticide treatment, the flower is washed with a warm shower in a day, not forgetting to close the soil in the pot with polyethylene. If necessary, spraying is repeated several times until the pest is completely destroyed.

7 tips for the grower

This succulent is in many ways similar to its counterparts. However, caring for it is slightly different.

If you want Zamioculcas to please you with beautiful dark green leaves for a long time, follow the tips below.

What are the secrets of proper plant care?

  1. Zamioculcas does not like excessive glaze. It tolerates a little drought better than waterlogging. Given the tuberous root system, you need to water the plant only around the perimeter of the pot, trying not to fill its core.
  2. In the spring and summer, the plant is desirable feed at each watering. And through time - in the autumn-winter. In this case, use should be made of ordinary mineral fertilizer for ornamental deciduous plants or succulents or urea. Unlike many brothers, Zamioculcas is very fond of foliar dressing, regardless of the season. 3. The plant sometimes "cries", which indicates high humidity. The droplets can also be an alarming signal, which gives the tuber, overflowing with water due to excessive watering.
  3. Green handsome can turn yellow, and this is a clear sign of a problem. If, with a lack of moisture, its stem slightly wrinkles, as with other succulents, then yellowness does not indicate dry soil, but overmoistening, which led to rotting of the tuber. In this case, the plant must be transplanted urgently, ruthlessly removing the spoiled tuber and thoroughly cleaning the rhizome so that there are no rotting processes left in it. After a transplant for about two weeks, Zamioculcas should not be watered.
  4. Zamioculcas grows and develops better in tight pots, therefore transplantit follows after the stem-shaped rhizomes abut against the walls of the vessel, practically “tear” it.
  5. Do not experiment and put this flower in deep shadow - this will lead to a violation of water and air balances, thinning of stems, fading colors. Best of all is soft diffused light.
  6. Preferring undisturbed rocky soil, Zamioculcas at the same time loves spraying, therefore, once a month it is worth washing it in the shower, while covering the soil. Especially such a procedure is needed in the winter when central heating "rages" in the apartments.
  7. Propagated Zamioculcas is easy enough. Fresh stalk needs to be placed in an earthen substrate or a glass of water, where a nodule with shoots is formed within 2 weeks. After rooting, the primary leaves turn yellow and die, which is the norm. Zamioculcas grows for a long time, and you should not be zealous with growth stimulants, otherwise the plant will die irrevocably.

With proper care, the plant can please not too bright, but such a pleasant “ears” of ivory in a pale green bedspread.

Propagation by cuttings

I propagated my zamioculcas both by cuttings of long leaves, and by leaf plates. I want to note that in Zamioculcas, a leaf is called the entire branch with leaf platinum, which grows from a tuber. And leaf plates are small leaves on a leaf.

  1. The leaves are cut into cuttings 15-20 cm long.
  2. The upper and lower sections were treated with crushed activated carbon and allowed them to dry out a little.
  3. Then planted in nutrient loose soil with perlite.
  4. I did not organize a greenhouse, I rooted in the summer, they stood on the porch.
  5. Watering every day.

After 2 months, I dug up one of the cuttings and saw at the end a rather large nodule with fleshy roots. She planted him in a separate pot, but noticed that he was a little sick before he went back to growth. I have already transplanted the rest of the cuttings with a lump of earth in order to injure plants as little as possible.

I planted several cuttings in 1 pot so that when the leaves grow, the plant was lush and immediately looked very presentable.

I want to note that, first, ground roots grow on the cuttings, and there are no aerial leaves. It may even seem that the plant is not growing, but just cuttings are standing. I was guided by the condition of the cuttings themselves. If they do not lose turgor and their original green color, then the process goes. You just need to be patient.

Six months later, my first leaf grew, with young leaf platinum. This was my first victory. Now I have sprouted leaves from all cuttings. This happens gradually and at different times.

Leaf plate propagation

This is the easiest way, since it is much easier to get a leaf from such a plant than, for example, a root or a large branch.

  1. Leaves break off or cut off with a growth point at the base. Fresh slices are sprinkled with shredded activated or charcoal and dried slightly.
  2. Leaflets are planted in glasses or cassettes with loose nutrient soil. Soil is made up of 1 part nutrient soil, 1 part washed river sand and 1 part peat or perlite.
  3. Be sure to lay a small drainage on the bottom.
  4. We dig into the ground the base of the sheet.
  5. We organize a mini-greenhouse, with a temperature of +22 to +25 ° C.

After a while, after about 2 to 3 months, at the base of the leaf a small nodule appears in the ground. When this happens, the “new” plant can be planted in a separate small pot.

I want to warn that you should not often dig out a plant and check whether a tuber has appeared. The plant does not like this and then for a long time more and may even die. They planted and forgot for a while.

Only occasionally ventilate the greenhouse, spray it and remove excess condensate.

When watering, do not overdo it, otherwise the plant may begin to rot and die quickly.
