How to store pears at home correctly

You can enjoy the taste of fresh pears not only during their ripening, but also in winter. Suffice it to learn how to store them properly. It is here that the owners of household plots and simply lovers of these juicy fruits usually lurks a failure. Unlike apples, pears have a different consistency of pulp and, if stored improperly, can become completely tasteless or completely rotten. Absolutely everything should be taken into account - their variety, temperature and humidity in the room, degree of maturity and other factors. In our article we will tell about how to store pears at home. But first, let us focus on creating favorable conditions for this.

Storage Recommendations

Pears, in comparison with apples, are quite a capricious product. Due to improper storage in the short term, they can turn into completely tasteless fruit. An important factor in this is the correct choice of variety. To ensure that the harvested crop does not lose its taste as long as possible, only winter pear varieties should be grown and harvested. Rip them still immature, which reduces the likelihood of damage to fruits and their rotting.

We present several recommendations on how to properly store pears:

  • the harvesting process should occur as carefully as possible, avoiding damage to the fruit, since these places will later become pockets of rot and spoilage,
  • during storage, pears must be picked and inspected (rotten and too ripe fruits are eliminated),
  • if the crop is stored in boxes, it is necessary to provide air access to it, therefore it is recommended to use cotton fabric as a cover,
  • the humidity of the air should not be too low, otherwise the pears will begin to dry and become tasteless,
  • when harvesting it is important to preserve the stem, which will increase the shelf life of the fruit,
  • the more light will come to the pears, the faster they will become overripe.

If the fruit is not planned to be eaten fresh and should be preserved in order to be used later for preparing various desserts, it is recommended to freeze pears. To do this, they are peeled and removed from the seed, sprinkled with lemon juice so that they do not darken, and put in special bags. In this form, pears can be stored for up to 6 months.

Temperature conditions

Optimal for storing pears is considered to be a temperature from 0 to 1 ° above zero. At home, you can organize the process in the refrigerator, on the balcony or in the pantry room, in the basement or cellar. Humidity should be at the level of 80-90%. But before you choose a way to store pears for the winter, you should deal with what varieties you have available. The timing will also depend on this directly:

  1. Summer varieties of pears, the harvest of which occurs at the end of July and the beginning of August, are stored for no more than 3 weeks. They should be plucked about 7-10 days before full maturity.
  2. The harvest of medium varieties of pears is going around the end of September. If you provide the right conditions, you can store it for 1-3 months. Fruits fall from the trees unripe.
  3. Winter varieties are collected in early October. They have dark green peel and firm flesh. These varieties are specially grown for storage. Before their full ripening period, it usually takes up to 3 months before the flesh inside becomes juicy and soft. Such pears can be stored for up to 7 months without loss of presentation and taste.

Technology storage of pears in the basement and cellar

In dark, cool rooms, the harvested crop can be without damage and loss of taste for quite a long period of time. At the same time, the observance of favorable conditions for storing pears is mandatory.

The first step is to prepare wooden boxes. They are installed on shelves or stands made of wood at a distance of 15-20 cm from the floor. As for the basement or cellar, the room must be treated from fungi and mold. The easiest way is to whitewash the walls with a solution of lime.

Before placing the pears in the box, you should wrap each paper or place it between the fruits. Another way is to fill the pears with sawdust. It is recommended to use a cotton cloth as a cover for the box.

Is it possible to save pears from spoiling in an apartment?

The crop of unripe fruits gathered on the site can be placed in apartment conditions. For this suitable storage room or a warmed balcony. The main thing is that the temperature on it is not too low, so that the fruits do not freeze.

Now you need to figure out how to store pears on the balcony. Wooden boxes are used for this. Directly pears are wrapped in paper, covered with wood chips or dry sand. If you want to speed up the ripening process of fruit, put at least one ripe fruit in their box.

Variety selection

If you want your pears to be kept fresh as long as possible, you need to think about this issue at the stage of choosing the type of tree, since the conditions and duration of fruit storage directly depend on the varietal characteristics. Experienced gardeners advise for these purposes to choose winter pear varieties, such as:

  • Armetovsky winter. Variety resistant to winter conditions. Crop begin to collect from the second decade of September. Pears can be kept fresh until the end of winter.
  • Winter Dean. Quite a good grade. The fruits have a sweet, slightly sour taste. Under proper storage conditions, the fruit remains fresh until early summer.
  • Kyrgyz winter. Pears are perfectly preserved at home until the end of spring. The fruits have a tart taste.

As well as winter varieties of apples, the corresponding varieties of pears are most suitable for maturation. However, it is not enough to choose a tree, it is also necessary to harvest in time to survive the winter. Therefore, it is worth knowing that pears of winter varieties begin to clean when they are not yet mature. Maturation occurs during storage. This allows you to reduce the number of fruits rotting during the maturation. It is also worth remembering that only whole, not damaged fruits should be removed for storage. Otherwise one rotting pear can cause damage to other pears.

Summer varieties of pears retain, mostly, only in dried form, since they are completely unsuitable for maturation.

Where and how to store pears at home

In the conditions of the house you can find many places where you can save the harvest of pears. The methods of storing pears are similar to the methods of storing apples in the winter. So this:

  • fridge,
  • basement cellar
  • balcony or pantry,
  • priming.
In the conditions of the house you can find many places where you can save pears

In the presence of a roomy refrigerator pears can "survive" the winter in it. To do this, they must be packaged in plastic bags of 1-2 kilograms. Packages to tie. But it is impossible to leave fruits in hermetically sealed bags, you need airs - you can make them by making small holes in the bags used for storage. The ideal storage temperature in this way is 3-40 ° C.

Basement or cellar. Here, as a rule, pears are stored on shelves and shelves, in boxes. In any of these options, pears should be raised at least 20 cm above the ground. For better storage during the winter each pear is recommended to be wrapped in soft paper, perhaps even papyrus.

On the balcony or in the pantry. In the absence of a cellar pears are well preserved in the pantry or on the balcony. The main thing is to properly put the fruit in the prepared container and to ensure that there is no negative temperature on the balcony, even if the winter is characterized by severe cold. Boxes are taken as storage containers, preferably with holes, so that the fruits can get enough air. After the fruits of the tail are folded up in boxes, they must be poured with sand. Instead of sand, you can use dry oak leaves, sawdust, foam chips.

In the ground, in special packages. Pears can be successfully stored in packets. To do this, the fruit must be packaged in 1-5 kg. When the first autumn frosts begin, bags of pears are buried on the site, placing them at a depth of 20-30cm. It is important to tie the package with a strong rope, one end of which is tied to a stick stuck next to the ground, which will mark the location of the crop. In order for the rodents to not reach the fruit before you need to store a place for storing it with lapniknik - branches of Christmas trees or juniper. You can store pears in this way for up to several months in a row. The main thing is that in the package all the fruits should be good, since one rotted pear will lead to the loss of all that is saved.

What to do if the harvest began to deteriorate

It happens that even under all conditions, the crop stored at home, suddenly begins to deteriorate. Then it is possible to preserve it with the help of fruit processing.

Pears make delicious jams, compotes. In the end, the pear is never too late to dry, and used in the future for cooking compotes.

One way or another, the harvest of pears is within the reach of everyone. Yes, you will have to make efforts for this, but in return, if the harvest was good, you will be provided with a tasty delicacy for the whole winter and spring.

Adding an article to a new collection

We hope you managed to harvest a good harvest of apples and pears this year. Now it must be properly preserved so that all your labors do not go down the drain. What to do for this?

Apples are summer, autumn and winter. First of all, they differ in skin: in summer it is more delicate and thin, and in winter it is more rough, oily, often with a waxy coating. Last longer than others remain fresh, so you should give preference to the varieties of apples for winter storage.

Winter pear varieties also differ in better keeping quality, since these fruits have a harder skin. But summer pears are not suitable for storage at all: they are too soft, juicy and begin to rot only a few days after they are removed from the tree.

How long can you store apples and pears

Winter apples and pears are stored for 3 to 8 months, while, as a rule, pears spoil faster. The bed life of the fruit depends not only on the variety, but also on the growing conditions, primarily on the temperature and humidity of the air during the growing season.

So, fruits that ripen in moderately warm weather without sudden changes in temperature are stored longer. Too hot weather accelerates ripening, but at the same time reduces the shelf life of apples and pears.

Fruits that ripen during the period of prolonged rains are stored about 2 months less than those grown in favorable weather conditions. The lack of heat, light and excess moisture reduces the resistance of apples and pears to mechanical damage and infection diseases.

How to prepare apples and pears for winter storage

The first thing you need to know when to remove apples and pears for storage. The fruits of winter varieties are usually harvested in September, but you need to focus not on time, but on the ripeness of the fruit.

Pears are harvested a little unripe, so that when they are put in storage they are still solid, but they have already managed to acquire the color characteristic of the variety. Apples must also be hard. Fruits that have already fallen from the tree are not suitable for storage: firstly, they are overripe, and secondly, damaged. Even a small scratch will quickly damage the fruit.

Apples and pears are removed from the tree with the stalk

In order not to destroy a large crop of apples and pears, the fruit is best to clean in dry weather, when the dew has dried. If the fruit froze during the night frosts, they are harvested after thawing, but the frozen fruits are not stored for a long time and used for processing. You do not know what to do with the harvest of apples and pears? Prepare apple juice, homemade cider, apple jam, bright and tasty pear jam.

Carefully removed from the tree apples and pears sorted. Whole medium sized fruits are selected for storage. To protect them from pests, a small piece of cotton cloth is moistened with glycerin and rubbed with fruit.

Processed fruit before eating should be well washed.

Collected fruits can not be immediately sent to storage in a cold cellar with a temperature of 1-2 ° C. After a sharp cooling, they will be covered with condensate, and wet fruits easily begin to rot. Therefore, before laying in the cellar, apples and pears are placed in a cooler room for some time than a room in the house, so that the temperature difference is not so contrasting.

Storage conditions for apples and pears

To store apples and pears, you need to find a cool, dark, dry room (without any mold). The air temperature in it should be from 0 to 4 ° C, and humidity - 85-90%. At the same time the room should be aired regularly.

At temperatures above 5 ° C, the fruits will start to rot, and at below 0 ° C - lose moisture and shrink

If the humidity exceeds the norm, the room is ventilated more and longer. Also in the store you can put a box with hydrated lime, it will help to cope with excessive dampness.

Before putting pears and apples for long-term storage in the cellar, the room must be well cleaned, sanitized (treated with 1% Bordeaux liquid, fumigated with sulfur, etc.) and ventilated.

When disinfecting in the corners of the storehouse, they put braziers (braziers can be used) with hot coals on which sulfur powder is poured (at the rate of 60 g per 1 square meter). The room is tightly closed for 2-3 days so that fumes of sulfur do not harm people and pets. Then the fryers clean and air the storage well.

Storage of apples and pears at home

Urban residents often prefer to store apples and pears in the apartment. This is the easiest way, but in this case it is important to choose the right container and place it in a cool place (most often it is done with a glazed balcony). As long as possible to keep the harvest of pears and apples will be in a clean wooden box with holes, a basket or a plastic box with grooves.

The bottom and walls of the container are covered with tissue paper or parchment paper, pears and apples, previously grouped by species and varieties, put the stem up or to the side so that the fruits do not touch each other. Then the fruit is covered with thin paper, chips or straw, and the second layer is laid up.

It is not recommended to stack fruit in more than 2 layers.

But how to keep a small crop of apples and pears? In order not to bother with bulk container for the sake of several fruits, each fruit can be wrapped in paper and put into a basket. With this method, rotting fruits will not infect healthy ones.

Storage of apples and pears in the cellar and basement

In the cellar they make racks. The bottom shelf is mounted at a height of 15-20 cm from the floor, and the top one is fixed so that between the container with fruit and the ceiling is at least 30 cm. The distance between the middle shelves must be such that between the box and the next shelf is at least 20 cm .

In the upper part of the room, the air temperature is higher than below, therefore the boxes with fruits that need to be stored longer are installed below, and for faster use, from above.

The bottom of the container is lined with paper, the fruits are laid in one row and put on the shelves.

When laying apples and pears, make sure that the stem is pointing up or sideways.

Often the harvest of pears and apples in the winter is stored in the basement, laying them in a pile of hay or dry leaves. It is also recommended to put mint, lemon balm or thyme on the bottom of the boxes and between the layers of fruit. These herbs will scare away insects and rodents, as well as reduce the release of ethylene in the fruit.

Storing apples and pears in the fridge

Recently, gardeners often practice storing apples and pears in packages. Fruits are placed in a plastic bag, filling it in half the volume, tied and made an incision with a length of about 10 cm or several round holes, so that the fruits "breathe". At high humidity inside the package condensate forms. This liquid will nourish the fruit and protect it from drying out.

Do not store pears and apples in the refrigerator next to other products that emit a strong smell. First of all it concerns onions and garlic

Now you know what to do with the harvest of pears and apples and how to keep them in winter. Just do not forget to regularly inspect the fruit and remove the spoiled, so that they do not become a source of infection and do not destroy the entire crop in the store.

Terms and collection technique

Summer varieties are ready for harvest in July - early August. In most, pears quickly re-ripen, losing all their qualities, and cannot be stored for longer than 7 days. In some cases, with the creation of optimal conditions, this period is extended to three weeks.

Autumn varieties are harvested in September, and after ripening, the fruits are ready for use from October - early November. From the moment of removal of the pear, the average ripening period shall be stored for up to 6 months.

Winter varieties are harvested from a tree on the border of September and October. Use the ripened fruits only after they lie down for an average of 4 months. Pears are stored in regulated conditions for up to 8 months.

You can empirically determine the optimal time of removal for each type of pear in a particular region. If you are late with the time of harvesting, the fruits may over-ripen and crumble. And if you hurry, the fruits that have not reached the condition will remain firm and tasteless, without acquiring a characteristic taste.

For a pear, the proper technique of picking fruit from a tree is important. Gentle and less resilient than apples, pear skin requires careful handling. When pressed on the surface remains a dent, which darkens and later leads to damage to the fruit. Therefore, they are removed, gently clasping his hand, not much squeezing. To do this, click on the stem and detach it from the branch.

How to store pears for the winter - starting with the choice of varieties

In order to store pears for winter at home was an easy task for the gardener, experts recommend choosing winter seedlings when choosing young seedlings.

  • Winter Dean - has a distinctive taste with a pleasant sourness. Harvesting is done at the beginning of October, and the fruits can be preserved until the beginning of summer.
  • Artyomovskaya winter - is resistant to winter conditions, and also less prone to scab. Harvesting begins in mid-September, and fruit storage is possible until February.
  • Kyrgyz winter pear has a tart taste, perfectly preserved until the end of spring.

How to store winter pears in the cellar

The optimal temperature for storing pears for winter at home is 0 ° C. Remember that sudden changes in temperature have a detrimental effect on the fruit. That is why try to maintain a constant optimum temperature. In addition, it is desirable to maintain the relative humidity of air within 85%. At lower humidity, fruits will shrivel, and at higher humidity they will start to rot quickly.

To reduce the excessive air humidity, experts recommend placing glasses with potassium chloride in the corners of the cellar - this substance absorbs moisture. True, this method works if you have a small cellar. Before you put the harvest in the cellar, you need to ventilate the room and disinfect (whiten the walls with lime mortar).

How to store pears and which storage container to choose?

Many gardeners are asking this question. The best option would be wooden boxes with holes for air to flow. In this case, the fruits are laid in such a way that the stalks look upwards. Do not stack the fruit in more than three four layers. Lay the layers should be straw or chips.

This is all fine, you will say, but what should the residents of megalopolises who do not have the luxury of a cellar do, and the storage of fruits and vegetables should be arranged in the living quarters. Well, we will understand how to store pears in the refrigerator. Autumn varieties (provided that they are collected in a state of maturity) will be able to remain in excellent condition for 5–6 months of cold storage.

Winter varieties are removed from the tree in early October, while they are not yet ready to eat - the fruit is very firm and green. When stored in the refrigerator, their maturity occurs in 2-3 months, and their shelf life will be approximately 6-8 months. How to save pears for the winter with the least loss, you will learn by reading our tips.

  1. Remember that only whole fruits are suitable for storage, without a single spot. If at least one pear with a spoiled side falls in the box, then in a week all the surrounding fruits will spoil.
  2. If the fruit is laid with a preserved stalk, its shelf life will increase significantly.
  3. It is necessary to put in boxes only dry fruits.
  4. These fruits do not like light, which is why it is desirable to cover the drawers with a dark cloth.
  5. And most importantly, try as often as possible to check your crop for safety and isolate suspicious fruits in time.
  6. If your stocks start to rot, it's never too late to roll pear fruit compote into banks!

Features storage of pears in the refrigerator

Since far from all apartments have balconies and storage rooms, many people have to rely only on the refrigerator in deciding on the placement of the harvest. How to store pears in this case?

The optimum temperature in the refrigerator should be from 1 to 4 degrees above zero. Pears themselves are packed in plastic bags of 1 kg each. In such a container it is necessary to make small openings for the access of air. Fruits are advised to inspect every day for the formation of spoilage and rot.

How to store pears so that they ripen?

Fruits from fruit trees are removed in the stage of technical maturity, when they are just beginning to turn yellow. In this form, while ensuring proper storage conditions, they can lie down until the spring. However, sometimes it is necessary to give the fruits to ripen faster, so that they can be eaten not after 3-5 months, but immediately now. Therefore, the question arises of how to store pears so that they ripen quickly.

First of all, they need to be placed in a room at a temperature of 18-20 degrees above zero. In this form they are left for a period of one to five days, but at the same time every day they are checked for their condition. In addition, pears can be put in one paper bag with apples and bananas. Substances that produce these fruits will accelerate the ripening of pears.

How to store dried pears?

In this form, the fruit can save a complete set of vitamins and minerals. But it is important to be able not only to properly dry the pears, but also to store the preparations correctly. To do this, it is recommended to use a sealed container to limit the ingress of air to the product.

Selection of fruits

Perhaps the main condition for long-term storage of pears is their careful selection.

Most performed well for fresh storage in autumn (Forest Beauty, Georges Boucher, Original, Dessert and others) and winter varieties of pears (Saratovka, Kondratievka, Pass-Krassan, Bere Ardanpon, Cure (William Winter) and others).

Pears are recommended to be removed from the tree, more underripe, because during storage they will have time to ripen. Thanks to this subtlety, significantly reduced rotting and spoilage of fruit.

The second factor to follow note - This is the appearance of the fruit. They should be without signs of spoilage, whole, dry, hard, without symptoms of the disease, without various defects. Be sure the presence of the stem.

The third rule relates directly to the collection of the pear. The weather must be by all means dry. If frosts begin and the temperature drops at night to -15 ° C, then the fruits become unsuitable for fresh storage.

Fruit needs to be removed accurately, strongly without pressing on them. It is necessary to clasp the pear with his hand, press on the stalk and, lifting it a little, separate it from the branch.

Proper packaging

How to keep pears for the winter at home?

The box must be with air access holes, if this condition is neglected, then rotting pears is inevitable. The bottom and sides of the container are lined with paper. Pears spread the stem up or to the side, so that they do not touch each other.

In one box stack pears of one grade. It is necessary to lay out pears in boxes in layers, each of which is necessary paper off, shavings or dry straw. Do not spread the fruit more than two layers.

Some gardeners keep these fruits without boxes, on specialized racks. On these shelves, covered with paper, pears are laid out in one layer of the stem up.

Choosing a place

Where and how to keep pears at home? Storage space for these fruits is not so much.

Cellar or basement must be disinfected. For disinfection, you can use the advice on fumigating the room with sulfur vapor.

To do this, put in the cellar brazier with hot coals and sulfur powder. The doors close tightly and after 2-3 days the room is completely disinfected.

There should be no trace on the walls. mildew and fungi. It is necessary to monitor compliance with the temperature and humidity. Pears should not be stored near other vegetables.

Special rooms for fruit storage: it can be a storage room, pantry or any unheated room. Storage conditions are similar: low temperature, humidity not less than 85%, good ventilation and lack of light. If the latter condition is difficult to fulfill, the boxes with the pears are covered with a dark cloth that passes the air well.

Each pear carefully wrapped in thin paper. It is undesirable to use a newspaper, because printing ink is not environmentally friendly. Tissue or parchment paper will do. Put in a box in one or two layers. Do not forget to regularly check for the presence of spoiled fruit.

In the absence of all the above storage locations, you can save a small amount of fresh pears in a refrigerator.

Dry, hard and slightly unripe pears packaged in 0.5 kg plastic bag. Make small punctures in the package for air intake.

Inspect the fruit regularly. At the slightest signs of damage you need to use the entire package.

Optimal conditions

How to keep pears fresh for a long time? Optimal storage conditions for pears in the apartment:

  • storage temperature
  • storage humidity.

For long-term preservation of the crop, it is necessary to strictly monitor compliance with the temperature and humidity of storage. If pears are stored on the balcony, then the temperature regime is up to -1 C, that is, until negative temperature.

When stored in the refrigerator, the required temperature is set within from +1 to +5 degrees Celsius. When stored in special rooms and cellar conditions are as follows:

  1. Temperature is from -1 to 0 ° C.
  2. Humidity from 85 to 90%.

Storage time

Unfortunately, even with all the methods of compliance with the regime, the storage time for pears is not very large. The average shelf life of fruit with proper storage from 2 to 4 months. Under ideal conditions, winter varieties can be saved until April, keeping them juicy and healthy.

But here it is necessary to take into account many factors: the type of fruit, the degree of maturity of the fruit at harvest, storage temperature, humidity of the room. AT the fridge the preservation of fresh fruit is very small: up to one month.

In spite of the fact that keeping pears fresh for a long time is very difficult, with the observance of all the above rules, this possibly.

Pears retain taste and beneficial qualities even after prolonged storage. For this reason, all the difficult activities to preserve them acquit.

In addition, if you are the owner of an annual large harvest of pears, you have the opportunity by the end of winter to earn a decent amount.

To do this, install in the cellar or basement brazier with hot coals and sulfur powder. Close the door to the room tightly and wait 2–3 days. After that, remove the grill and carefully inspect the floor and walls of the vault - they should not be mold.

The optimal storage temperature for pears in the utility rooms is from –1 to 0 ° С. Humidity should be between 85 and 90%. Compliance with these conditions is extremely important, since at higher rates the fruits rot, and at lower rates they wither. Also experienced gardeners recommend to protect fruits from temperature fluctuations. Due to a sharp change in the microclimate, the skin of pears can become loose and their flesh can lose elasticity.

In homestead premises, pears are stored on shelves, shelves or in boxes. Fruits should be at some distance from the ground - about 20 cm from it.

Storing pears in the winter at home - how to keep your favorite fruit juicy and healthy?

In the boxes must be provided openings for the free circulation of air. Cover the bottom of the container with paper, lay the fruit up, then lay the paper again, then the pears again and the paper again. In one box, place the fruits of one variety.

The storage time for pears in basements and cellars varies from 3 weeks to 4 months. Late varieties are hardier than early ones

If you keep the pears on the open shelves, cover them with paper, do not put the fruit directly on the boards.

The storage time for pears in basements and cellars varies from 3 weeks to 4 months. Late varieties are sturdier than early ones, the harvest of such fruits can be protected from spoilage at home until April.

Check your stocks regularly. If the fruit began to rot, you need to sort out the entire crop and get rid of spoiled.

In the apartment

The best place to store pears in an apartment in the winter is a glazed balcony. It is allowed to lower the temperature to –1 ° С, not lower. Negative temperatures adversely affect the quality of pears.

Fruits gently fold in two layers in prepared boxes, pouring each with straw or sand. For greater reliability, wrap each pear in paper. In this state, they can be stored for 2-3 months.

A small fruit crop can be placed in the refrigerator. Lower or middle shelves are best suited, where temperatures range from +1 ° C to +5 ° C. Fruit packaged in packages of several pieces. The shelf life of pears in such conditions does not exceed 1 month.

Memo on the choice of fruits

The main guarantee of long and safe storage of pears at home is a competent approach to the selection of fruits. So, it is recommended to collect pears before they finally ripen. Choose only solid whole fruits with no visible injuries and dents. The stem should remain whole. Harvesting is carried out in dry and warm weather. Gently wrap the pear in your hand and, slightly pressing on the stem, separate the fruit from the branch. To save yourself time in the future, immediately sort the fruit by size and degree of maturity.

Despite the fact that pears are quite capricious in matters of storage, with due diligence, you can please your loved ones with fresh fruits throughout the winter. And even if part of the stock began to deteriorate, do not be discouraged. These pears make delicious jams, preserves, compotes and fillings for sweet pies.

By the time of onset of removable maturity, summer, autumn and winter varieties of pears are distinguished. In varieties of summer ripening period, the removable ripeness of fruits almost coincides with consumer maturity. The shelf life of the fruit varieties of this group is 10-15 days. Pears of autumn and winter varieties are well kept. Many gardeners, choosing a pear variety for their garden, refuse varieties of winter ripening, suggesting that the fruits of these varieties are viscous, not juicy, not the best taste. However, this is a misconception. You can taste pears of excellent taste in late autumn and winter period, competently approaching the choice of variety. Pears of winter maturity, harvested during the period of removable maturity, reach the consumer only during storage. Winter varieties of pears when renting hard, but after a while, reaching consumer maturity, they become juicy and sweet.

Winter pear varieties are very popular among gardeners. In the autumn, when there is a harvest from fruit trees, there is almost no fresh fruit, these trees still have beautiful, juicy fruits that delight them with their excellent taste. Amateur gardeners try to plant pear varieties with different ripening periods on their land. But if the farm has the conditions for long-term storage of fruits, then the varieties of winter ripening period become the most relevant.

The excellent taste of the fruit and the possibility of its long-term storage are huge advantages of winter pear varieties over pears of other ripening terms. These fruits can be stored in the cold for a very long time, until the new harvest.

When do you need to pick apples and pears?

The fruits distinguish removable and consumer maturity. The first offensive means it's time to start harvesting. At this moment the growth of the fruits ends, the accumulation in them of all that they can receive from the mother tree is completed. The signal that the removable maturity has come, - the peduncles begin to easily separate from the tree, the pear will be removed even with little effort. On the eve of the harvest, you can slightly shake a sprig of a tree. Falling fruit with whole stalks and without leaves is a sure sign that the harvest period has come. If you miss this time, the harvest will be fairly quickly on the ground. You should not worry if pears are harsh at the moment of removable maturity - they are able to “reach” during subsequent storage.

It is especially important to determine the onset of removable maturity for late pear varieties.

Storage preparation

Pears of all varieties in varying degrees are suitable for laying on more or less long-term storage. Before being sent to the storage facility, the fruits are selected in accordance with a number of requirements and must:

  • belong to the autumn or winter varieties,
  • free from frost
  • reach the technical stage of maturity
  • the surface should be dry, clean, without damage,
  • have a stalk and wax deposit in place,
  • to be chilled after removal.

In addition to the actual fruits to be stored, attention should be paid to the container for the harvested crop. It has a number of requirements, compliance with which guarantees the longest storage of pears.

  • Capacity from a tree - an optimal variant for storage of fruits. The wooden box must be clean, dry and treated (fumigated with sulfur) to prevent rot and mold growth. The plastic packaging option does not guarantee optimal conditions.
  • The container should not be sealed: the presence of a sufficient number of holes will provide air and gas exchange, necessary for the safety of fruit. Otherwise, the harvest will quickly deteriorate.
  • The size of the boxes is sufficient for storing the fruits with one layer of upward stems, and they should not touch. The height of the box should provide a display of no more than two rows. Optimally in one container to place up to 15 kg of fruit.
  • The box is laid out all over the inner surface with wrapping paper - not a newspaper, which is also distributed among the fruits.
  • In order to separate the fruits from each other, you can use not only paper, but also straw, sawdust from hardwood trees, peat and dried moss.
  • Together in one container is not recommended to lay pears of different varieties. It is desirable that the fruits were also calibrated in size.
  • If the pears are to be stored in plastic bags, then before laying the fruit is cooled, and then the air is pumped out of the bags.

Harvest stores

The main factors affecting the safety of the fruit are the temperature within 0 ... 2 ºС and humidity 85-95%. When these values are exceeded, the fruits begin to rot, and when lowered, they will dry out. Pears during storage should also be protected from light, covered with a cloth - this is also true during fruit ripening. Choose a place to store the harvest, it is necessary on the basis of the following parameters:

  1. Cellar and basement. The room requires a clean, relatively dry with humidity and temperature within acceptable limits. For disinfection, fumigation with sulfur vapor is carried out. Do not place other fruits and vegetables near the boxes with pears.
  2. Storeroom and closet. If in a separate unheated dark room it is cool enough and there is good ventilation, then it is logical to equip shelves on which the crop is laid out in the same way as in the boxes.
  3. Balcony. In the absence of sub-zero temperatures, the fruit will lie here for up to 3 months. Each pear wrapped in paper and stored in containers.
  4. Fridge. Suitable for a small number of pears, which are packed in 0.5 kg bags in plastic bags with small holes for air exchange. Under them take a separate shelf or container away from other products - then the pears will remain fresh for up to two months.
  5. Freezer. Sliced pears can be frozen. In the freezer, the fruit will lie for several months without losing its useful quality.
  6. Location on. Selected fruits must be packaged in sealed plastic bags and tied with a rope. With the onset of frost bags are buried in the ground to a depth

25 cm. The end of the rope is attached to a stick stuck in the ground - this will mark the location of the harvest. Spruce or juniper branches are laid on top to scare off rodents. With this method, pears are stored for several months.

Save the fruit of the fruits of each. Knowing how to store pears at home, you can provide yourself and your loved ones with a useful and vitamin delicacy for the whole winter and spring. If you make an effort and comply with the recommendations, the taste, aroma and texture of the fruit remain at the proper level for a long time.

Take your time with cleaning.

In general, experts advise to remove the pears at an acceptable late date. In early autumn, the air temperature decreases slowly, and the fruits begin to gradually get used to the cold. And after quenching, they feel better in a cool cellar. But here it is important that they fall into the store directly from the branches - if you keep the pears warm, their keeping quality decreases sharply. Collect the fruit in gloves. This may seem redundant, but pears with the slightest skin damage will not be stored.

Storage methods

1. In the boxes. Pear storage boxes should be shallow and trellised (these usually sell fruits and berries in the markets). Fruits in them stack in one row on a diagonal. The tails must be between the fruits, otherwise they may scratch the neighbors. In the cellar drawers are on top of each other In this case, air will circulate between them, which is very useful for fruit. You can fall asleep pears foam chips, healthy and clean leaves of oak, maple, aspen, buckwheat husks, moss. Sawdust is better not to use.

2. In packages. In this case, the fruit is placed in a tight plastic bag and hermetically sealed it. Any punctures in the film are not allowed! The packaging of the fruit should be carried out directly in the cellar, so that the temperature inside the bag is the same as in the vault. Otherwise, moisture will accumulate inside the bag and the pears will rot.

But isn't it wonderful, in a cold snowy evening, to please yourself and your relatives with fresh homemade fruit? You can taste fragrant pears throughout almost the whole winter and sometimes spring. In comparison with apples pears are characterized by less persistence.

The best conditions for their storage are as follows: temperatures ranging from –1 to 0 degrees and relative humidity of air in the storage facility are 85–90 percent.

When storing pears, it is impossible to allow sharp fluctuations in temperature, as this causes the fruits to sweat, weaken their tissues and, consequently, rapid deterioration of the fruits.

When laying pears in uncooled storages with positive temperatures close to 8 degrees, their shelf life is significantly reduced.

The shelf life of pears also depends on the growing conditions and the state of maturity of the fruit. To lay them in storage, it is necessary to remove them from the tree at the stage of technical ripeness, i.e. immature, after the green color disappears.

The nature of ripening and the quality of pears ripened during storage depends on the properties of the pomological variety. For example, Bere Bosk, Williams summer and winter varieties, Forest beauty, harvested closer to the maturity of the dining room, give juicy and tasty pulp during ripening, and their shelf life is very small. The same varieties, taken from the tree in the stage of technical maturity, are preserved better, but the pulp during ripening will not be juicy and tasty.

Pears must be removed from the tree carefully, manually, without causing mechanical damage to the fruit. You can not pull out or break off the stem, as this leads to deterioration of the fruit during storage.

After removal, pears are sorted by size, degree of maturity, remove fruits affected by agricultural pests and with mechanical damage. Sorted pears are placed in lattice boxes of the Bulgarian type. The bottom and sides of the boxes are lined with clean paper and the pears are placed with the stalks up or to the side and shifted with thin paper so that they do not touch one another.

Over the first row put the second, third, etc., shifting each layer of thin paper.

Boxes with pears are put up for the night in a ventilated place, under a shed, and in the early morning hours they are put into storage.

The shelf life of early varieties — Bessemyanka, Summer Williams, Ilyinka, Limonka, Panna, and others — at a cold temperature — 2–3 weeks, in non-cooled basements or cellars — 1–2 weeks.

How to store pears at home so that they remain healthy and tasty?

Autumn varieties — Forest Beauty, Marianna, Autumn Bergamot, Klapp's Beloved, Bere Bosc, and others — with a cold temperature you can save 1.5–2 months, and in uncooled storehouses, 1–1.5 months.

The storage period for winter varieties is Cure (William Winter), Beres Winter Michurina, Saint-Germain, Olivier de Serres, Royal Piano, Bergamot, etc. — 2–4 months at cold temperatures and 1–2 months in uncooled stores.

These periods depend mainly on the type of removal of fruit from the tree, their quality, degree of maturity, storage temperature and its constancy, relative humidity of the air and sanitary condition of the storage facility.

Ripe pears

Dedicated to my girlfriends.

Nina Usatova, a famous and very beloved actress, in one of the television interviews said: “A woman can be ugly up to thirty years old, but if she is ugly and after, then she is a fool!”.
I completely agree with her, but I also want to add to these words and from myself.
Have you ever tasted pears? I tried to pick up such a word for a reason: it was to eat, enjoying this fruit gradually - its appearance, viewed from all sides, then with aroma, lightly rubbing the transparent skin with the fingers. And, finally, biting off small pieces of juicy fruit - enjoying and feeling the gradual change of taste from the very sweet in the skin and slightly sour in the kernels. Now, chewing the seeds themselves, you feel their light sweet-bitterness ...

Stop for a few moments to experience this unforgettable aftertaste! Well, here you finally have a complete idea about the taste of pears! But there are a lot of varieties of pears and the richness of their taste can be studied and studied, getting another magical feeling of this world.

Yes, and from one tree, you can take samples repeatedly, starting with green pears and moving slowly to ripe ones. But that's not all. The most delicious pears remain on the tree for a long time, being somewhere high on a branch and which you could not or did not want to get to before, when there were still a lot of fruits, just extend your hand. Now, the remaining singles shine with small suns from afar, causing you to have a Pavlov reflex and, induce you not to be lazy, put up a ladder and tear them down, and taste the juicy, flesh melting in your mouth.

Remember, feel?
So you can go back to the beginning of the story, i.e. to the words about the woman. This Woman and in the most "ripe" age continues to please with a pleasant appearance, to smell sweet with the inimitable charm of femininity, to give a sensation of amazing taste and aftertaste from communication and to shine with the surrounding little sun!
