Pears of winter maturity, harvested during the period of removable maturity, reach the consumer only during storage. When do you need to pick apples and pears?
The fruits distinguish removable and consumer maturity. The first offensive means it's time to start harvesting. At this moment the growth of the fruits ends, the accumulation in them of all that they can receive from the mother tree is completed. The signal that the removable maturity has come, - the peduncles begin to easily separate from the tree, the pear will be removed even with little effort. On the eve of the harvest, you can slightly shake a sprig of a tree. Falling fruit with whole stalks and without leaves is a sure sign that the harvest period has come. If you miss this time, the harvest will be fairly quickly on the ground. You should not worry if pears are harsh at the moment of removable maturity - they are able to “reach” during subsequent storage.
It is especially important to determine the onset of removable maturity for late pear varieties.
Pears of all varieties in varying degrees are suitable for laying on more or less long-term storage. Before being sent to the storage facility, the fruits are selected in accordance with a number of requirements and must:
- belong to the autumn or winter varieties,
- free from frost
- reach the technical stage of maturity
- the surface should be dry, clean, without damage,
- have a stalk and wax deposit in place,
- to be chilled after removal.
In addition to the actual fruits to be stored, attention should be paid to the container for the harvested crop. It has a number of requirements, compliance with which guarantees the longest storage of pears.
- Capacity from a tree - an optimal variant for storage of fruits. The wooden box must be clean, dry and treated (fumigated with sulfur) to prevent rot and mold growth. The plastic packaging option does not guarantee optimal conditions.
- The container should not be sealed: the presence of a sufficient number of holes will provide air and gas exchange, necessary for the safety of fruit. Otherwise, the harvest will quickly deteriorate.
- The size of the boxes is sufficient for storing the fruits with one layer of upward stems, and they should not touch. The height of the box should provide a display of no more than two rows. Optimally in one container to place up to 15 kg of fruit.
- The box is laid out all over the inner surface with wrapping paper - not a newspaper, which is also distributed among the fruits.
- In order to separate the fruits from each other, you can use not only paper, but also straw, sawdust from hardwood trees, peat and dried moss.
- Together in one container is not recommended to lay pears of different varieties. It is desirable that the fruits were also calibrated in size.
- If the pears are to be stored in plastic bags, then before laying the fruit is cooled, and then the air is pumped out of the bags.
The main factors affecting the safety of the fruit are the temperature within 0 ... 2 ºС and humidity 85-95%. When these values are exceeded, the fruits begin to rot, and when lowered, they will dry out. Pears during storage should also be protected from light, covered with a cloth - this is also true during fruit ripening. Choose a place to store the harvest, it is necessary on the basis of the following parameters:
- Cellar and basement. The room requires a clean, relatively dry with humidity and temperature within acceptable limits. For disinfection, fumigation with sulfur vapor is carried out. Do not place other fruits and vegetables near the boxes with pears.
- Storeroom and closet. If in a separate unheated dark room it is cool enough and there is good ventilation, then it is logical to equip shelves on which the crop is laid out in the same way as in the boxes.
- Balcony. In the absence of sub-zero temperatures, the fruit will lie here for up to 3 months. Each pear wrapped in paper and stored in containers.
- Fridge. Suitable for a small number of pears, which are packed in 0.5 kg bags in plastic bags with small holes for air exchange. Under them take a separate shelf or container away from other products - then the pears will remain fresh for up to two months.
- Freezer. Sliced pears can be frozen. In the freezer, the fruit will lie for several months without losing its useful quality.
- Location on. Selected fruits must be packaged in sealed plastic bags and tied with a rope. With the onset of frost bags are buried in the ground to a depth
25 cm. The end of the rope is attached to a stick stuck in the ground - this will mark the location of the harvest. Spruce or juniper branches are laid on top to scare off rodents. With this method, pears are stored for several months.

For example, Bere Bosk, Williams summer and winter varieties, Forest beauty, harvested closer to the maturity of the dining room, give juicy and tasty pulp during ripening, and their shelf life is very small. The same varieties, taken from the tree in the stage of technical maturity, are preserved better, but the pulp during ripening will not be juicy and tasty.
Pears must be removed from the tree carefully, manually, without causing mechanical damage to the fruit. You can not pull out or break off the stem, as this leads to deterioration of the fruit during storage.
After removal, pears are sorted by size, degree of maturity, remove fruits affected by agricultural pests and with mechanical damage. Sorted pears are placed in lattice boxes of the Bulgarian type.
