Gender description

Weigela is a genus of deciduous shrubs of the Honeysuckle family with bell-shaped flowers of pink, yellow, cream, brick, white and dark red colors, and the color can vary depending on the flowering phase.

Shrub blossoms twice a year: from mid-May to mid-June and from mid-August to the first cold snap in September. The lush and long flowering makes the weigela a great choice when designing the landscape.

Popular species and varieties

The genus includes from twelve to fifteen varieties of shrubs. In the nature of our latitudes, three wild species are represented, on the basis of which nine ornamental species are derived. In this article we look at the most popular types.

The abundantly blooming hybrid weigela reaches one and a half meters in height. Gardeners often use hybrid varieties to design their site. The color of the inflorescences depends on the hybrid variety:

  • "Red Prince".The shrub of this variety has rich red flowers. The bush is quite compact, therefore it is well suited for planting in groups in small areas,
  • "Eva Ratke" - breeding variety bred by crossing the Korean and blooming weigela. Bushes small, grow to a meter. The flowers are glossy, dark red,
  • "Fier Lemoine" has delicate pink flowers and a relatively tiny bush size,
  • Debussy - the most early flowering variety of the hybrid species of weigela. It has small red flowers,
  • "Gustav Malle." The crossing of flowering and Korean weigela allowed us to obtain a variety that has dark pink flowers with a white frill,

The plant is originally from Japan. The size of perennial Weigela Maksimovich is relatively average, one and a half meters high. The bush blossoms with yellowish bell-shaped flowers from mid-May to mid-June.

This type of weigela is found in coniferous forests, it blooms twice a year with flowers of yellow color with orange spots and dots. As an ornamental shrub looks spectacular with a group landing.

Luxurious shrub up to five meters. The domesticated bush grows up to one and a half meters. The leaves are glossy on top and hairy below. The flowers are able to change color: from the moment of flowering, they are pale pink, and in the period of violent bloom - carmine.

Flowering occurs two weeks later than in other species, and lasts about a month.

Weigela with such a sonorous name is common in Primorye, on the Kuriles and Sakhalin. Wild-growing shrub is almost not cultivated, therefore in the middle lane most often the seeds in the boxes do not ripen.

Also blooms twice in summer with pink-purple flowers, 3 centimeters in diameter. The height of the bush is relatively small - from a meter to one and a half.

Wild shrub in the mountains of Japan. The name of the species speaks for itself: on a lush bush with a height of three meters, many dark red flowers are formed, which eventually turn light pink. The plant is frost-resistant and moisture-loving, but very demanding on the soil.

Weigela blooming ("Florida") is found in northern China and areas of Primorye. Blooms profusely - flowers form four inflorescences of bright pink color. It has the following subspecies:

  • "Alexandra" - has dark purple leaves and flowers,
  • Weigela purple. It has terracotta leaves and bright pink flowers,
  • Weigela is pink. The form has dark pink flowers, white inside,
  • Alba. A miniature-shaped shrub whose white inflorescences turn pink during the period of withering,
  • Weigela "Victoria". During flowering, the bush becomes almost monotonous: the leaves have a brownish-red color, and the inflorescences are crimson.

Weigela early - inhabitant of the rocky slopes of China and North Korea. It has a neat spherical shape of the crown. Flowers - bright pink with a yellow core.

Weigela Garden originally from Japan. Differs miniature: the height of the bush - no more than one meter. Blooms profusely. Pink-carmine bloom persists on the bush for about three weeks.

Weigela Japanese also can not boast of a special height, but shrubs up to a meter make it an excellent decorative ornament for the garden plot.

Growing tips

Recommendations for agricultural machinery Weigela:

  1. Weigela prefers a warm climate, and in spite of the fact that there are sufficiently cold-resistant species of the plant, it bears down the winter hard and requires shelter.
  2. Land for planting is to choose sunny, with loose fertilized soil.
  3. Landing is made in the spring.
  4. Further watering the bush should be regular and abundant.
  5. It is useful to carry out mulching and loosening the soil, as well as formative pruning of branches.

All types and varieties of weigela are very popular in landscape design. Particularly impressive sprawling weigela crown looks in the garden, decorated in Japanese style. Considering the photo of this wonderful shrub, you definitely want to have one on your site.

Description and features

Weigela natural habitat is the Far East of Russia, China and Japan. In total, there are up to 15 species of this plant. This ornamental shrub belongs to the honeysuckle family. It can reach 2-3 meters in height, the diameter of the crown - up to 3.5 meters.

Weigela has petiolate leaves of dark green color, sometimes with a red border. Like most deciduous plants, they appear after the completion of the flowering stage. The color of the inflorescences depends on the variety; in addition, their shade may change during the season - from light to more saturated at the end.

There are a lot of flowers on the weigel, due to which the bush looks unusually attractive. As a rule, these are small (4-5 cm) five-leafed bells, both collected in inflorescences and single. Without smell. Because of their lightness, they quickly crumble in windy weather, so for Weigela it is advisable to choose a place protected from drafts.

Types of weigela

Being a heat-loving plant, weigela does not tolerate frosts quite well. For this reason, most of its varieties are grown in greenhouses and winter gardens. But, nevertheless, several types of shrubs adapt well to moderate continental conditions. In particular, these include Far Eastern and some hybrids.

Weigela early (Weigela praecox)

It grows to about 2 meters. It is resistant to cold, in its wild form it is found on the rocky slopes of the Ussuri region, in North Korea and China. It is easy to recognize Weigel's early by large tassels hanging down bright pink and reddish-purple flowers, which can be observed for as long as 30 days.

Weigela pleasant (Weigela suavis)

Low-growing form, reaching a height of only 1.5 m. It acquired its name due to unusual flowers - funnel-shaped bells up to 6 cm long, with a velvety surface and gradient transitions of shades (white-pink, red-violet, lilac-cream).

Weigela blooming (Weigela florida)

The common name of hybrids. This category includes large 3-meter bushes of different shades, and dwarf, which can be used to decorate balconies, greenhouses or alpine slides. The main advantage of the flowering hybrids in comparison with the wild species of weigela is a more saturated color of flowers, a wide variety of palettes, and hence, increased decorativeness.

Planting weigela

Weigla should be planted in open ground in early spring when buds begin to swell on fruit trees and there is no threat of frost. It is best to choose a three-year seedlings - they are better adapted to the cold, while young plants may die in the first winter.

The key to a long and beautiful flowering - a good landing site. For the weigela, the areas on the south side that are illuminated by the sun and are well protected from the wind are ideal.

The soil should be loose, easily absorb moisture. It is recommended to mix heavy clay soils, chernozems, peatlands with sand and turf. The size of the pit depends on the root system of the seedling; for a standard plant, a depth of 40-50 cm will be sufficient. Approximately 15 centimeters drainage layer (gravel, expanded clay, broken bricks) and then light earth with fertilizers (a compost bucket) should be poured into the bottom of the pit. and 100 g Nitrofoski under one bush).

Treatment of roots with growth stimulants will help speed up the survival of weigela. When planting, the root neck of the seedling should be flush with the ground, which should be well tamped and watered. So that the soil does not dry out, it should be mulched with sawdust, straw or other improvised materials.

The distance between tall bushes should be at least 2.5 meters, while dwarf varieties can be positioned at intervals of 80 cm.

In temperate climates, weigel does not require a special temperature regime - it develops well in the open air, like other ornamental bushes. Optimal conditions in the flowering season - 18-21 C. It is advisable only to prevent frostbite of the roots and trunks of young plants in winter, otherwise they may die.

Water weigela recommended moderately. It is best to use separated water at room temperature. In the summer, you need to provide more frequent hydration. A layer of mulch around the bush will help prevent the soil from drying out.

Several times a year, the ground under the weigela should be loosened so that air can reach the roots. It will be enough to dig a little bush on the spade bayonet, retreating from the trunk on all sides by about 2/3 of the crown.

For active flowering, weigela bushes need trace elements that are not always enough in the soil. Compost and nitrofoski, planted during planting, will be sufficient for two years. In the third year in early spring, it is worthwhile to bring a new portion of nutrients into the earth. They must contain potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus. During flowering, fertilizing is carried out with superphosphate and potassium sulphate, and in the fall wood ash (200 g / m2) or Kemira fertilizer is mixed into the soil.

A good time to trim the weigela is early spring (March - early April). During this period, frozen and dry branches should be removed, and crown should be formed. Without a kind of preventive “haircut” the bush will grow, and there will be less and less flowers on it, while cropping will have the opposite, positive effect.

Shelter for the winter

The degree of weigela insulation depends on the region - in the southern climate you can get by just hilling the trunk and a good layer of mulch, while in the northern one you will have to look for more reliable options. Some gardeners bind the branches together, and then wrap them with hay, straw, needles, rolled insulation, covered with agrofibre or black film. These methods are especially relevant for snow-free frost winters, because snow in itself protects plants.

It should be noted that the dying off of the branches is not so critical for the weigel bushes as the damage to the roots. They can not be warmed in wet weather. Dried ground at the base of the plant should be loosened, mixed with compost or peat, and be sure to sprinkle the tree trunk circle with the same mixture.

Breeding weigel

Weigela reproduces in two ways - cuttings and seeds. But since growing from seed is extremely long, at home almost no one does it.

Cutting can be carried out in spring or autumn. From the mother plant cut off the green (autumn - stiffened) shoots 10-12 cm long, with a small part of the donor branch. Each of them should have at least three buds. The cut-off areas are processed by the root formation stimulator, and then the cuttings are planted in the seedling boxes with light sandy-sod soil.

Future seedlings should be provided with a temperature of + 18-21 and regular watering with warm water. To create a greenhouse effect, the boxes are covered with foil. Under such conditions, roots on cuttings appear after about 25 days, and young plants can be planted outside after 1-2 years.

As a vivid representative of the honeysuckle family, adult weigel bushes can reach a height of half a meter to two meters.

Inflorescences resemble umbrellas, collected from tubular flowers.

The most common varieties suitable for cultivation in unstable climatic conditions are hybrid weigela and weigela variety named after Middendorf.

Weigela Middendorf in this photo is simply gorgeous. In the photo of Weigela is a variety of "Eva Ratke"

These varieties are very popular with middleland gardeners, as they are characterized by high winter resistance, which is why they can be more often found on the market.

Weigel is liked by many more because the period of flowering of this stunningly beautiful shrub is repeated twice during the summer season. The first time the plant blooms, like many others, in the spring.

At this time, is very lush and bright bloom, the second time - weigela blooms in autumn.

Of course, re-flowering is not so abundant, sometimes it may not come at all due to the cold weather, but if the weigela blooms in the fall, then the spectacle is no less amazing than in the spring.

Weigel bushes care

Having decided on the type of plant and selected the necessary seedlings, it remains to choose a place for planting shrubs in the garden plot. Since weigla rarely reaches a height of more than one and a half meters in the middle zone, it is necessary to choose a site for planting, taking this fact into account.

Shrub weigela and its planting and care is quite suitable for novice amateur gardeners.

The shrub grows well on sunny, but at the same time sheltered areas from strong gusts of wind, so the best option for planting weigels will be platforms located next to different trees or taller shrubs. Group plantings will not only create favorable conditions for the development of weigela, but will also protect the plant from freezing in winter.

The soil in the selected area should be humus and quite loose. Watering the plant should be moderate, excessive moisture can adversely affect the development of seedlings.

Susceptible to the plant and feeding, especially well responds to the introduction of complex mineral fertilizers. Top dressing can be carried out in early spring, after the snow cover disappears, at this time the bud of flower buds takes place and the plant prepares for abundant flowering.

At the beginning of autumn, additional fertilizing can be carried out with the use of phosphorus-potassium fertilizers to stimulate the process of lignification of the cells, so that weigel bushes could better survive the coming cold. With the onset of heat, the plant requires sanitary pruning of shoots damaged during the winter, and pruning is also carried out after the shrub has faded to remove those branches that will no longer bloom.

In the first few years after planting, young seedlings must be very carefully covered for winter with spruce branches or fallen leaves, additionally wrapping the plant with a layer of covering material. Older weigels also need a good winter shelter.

Weigela and its reproduction

So, how to propagate weigela? Weigel can be propagated in several ways: using seeds, cuttings of annual shoots or already half-woody cuttings.

The first method of obtaining weigela seedlings is considered to be too long and is used except for obtaining new plant varieties, the third method is also unpopular, since semi-woody cuttings rarely take root.

However, many are interested in the question of how to propagate weigela by cuttings.

But here the method of breeding weigela with the help of annual green shoots is more successful for this shrub, as it allows to achieve good results, therefore it is used almost everywhere.

How to propagate weigela cuttings - detailed instructions

Young green cuttings are cut to ten centimeters long. Each such cutting must necessarily contain at least two pairs of well-developed leaves.

June is considered the optimal month for the breeding procedure in this way. Harvested cuttings must be treated with a special solution, which includes heteroauxin.

Then they are planted in a greenhouse or covered with a film until rooting. By transplanting to a place of permanent growth, such cuttings will be ready by next spring.

The plants obtained in this way begin to bloom in about three years.

Due to its decorative appearance, weigela perfectly complements various group planting of other trees and shrubs, therefore many landscape designers include it in various compositions for gardening of various territories.

Weigela Hybrid - Weigela hybrida

Weigela is a shrub plant with a fibrous root system, strongly branching. Its stems are rather fragile due to weak stiffness, therefore weigela should be handled with care.

Stems of weigel are usually densely leafy, leaves are petiolate, oblong, slightly pointed at the end, with smooth edges. The color of the leaves is green, but there are varieties with a two-color, green-white, as in the photo, and even with an unusual, purple color.

The latter also looks very impressive - pay attention to the photo.

Weigela Hybrid - Weigela hybrida

Genus: perennial shrubs.

Leaves: petiolate, simple.

Flower: bell-shaped, tubular.

Homeland: East Asia.

Location: bright place, protected from the north winds, light fertile soil.

Varieties: About 180 varieties are known.

Meet the eastern visitor - Weigel's shrub plant (in the photo). It came to us from East Asia and won the hearts of amateur gardeners with its rich foliage and color, bright colors.

Weigel hybrid is the common name for several hybrid forms, obtained by crossing flowering weigels, flowering flowering weighe, Korean weigels and garden weigels.

These include about 180 varieties, which differ in size - from dwarf forms in height from 20 to 60 cm, to huge shrubs up to 3 m in height with a crown diameter of up to 3.5 m.

Weigela got its name thanks to the researcher - Baron von Weigel, who first described this plant. It is distinguished not only by the density of foliage, but also by abundant flowering.

  • Flowers solitary or collected in loose buds, are formed in the axils of the leaves.
  • The shape of the flowers can be bell-shaped or tubular.
  • The color of flowers - pink, pink-violet, white, yellow, also two-colored varieties are found either with a border around the edge of the petal.

Weigela hybrid varieties Bristol Ruby

Blooms veygela hybrid twice.

  • The first time is at the end of May – June. After that, the plant is cut, tearing off dried flowers.
  • The second time weigela blooms in August-September, although now the flowering will not be so abundant, and the flowers themselves are slightly smaller in size.

Varieties of Weigela Hybrid

Weigela hybrid has many varieties that differ in size of the bush, and the color of leaves and flowers.

Let's look at some of them.

one of the most popular varieties in our country, which is primarily due to its quality, such as good frost resistance (in the photo).

  • Among other advantages - the ability to bloom not only in the sun, this variety will feel good in light penumbra.
  • The flowers are ruby-red, because of which, in fact, the variety got its name, the buds are slightly lighter than the open flowers.

This variety is well suited to you to create a low hedge in the area. You can admire the variety in the photo above.

also quite popular variety.

  • Shrub compact, up to 1 m. With age, the crown grows.
  • Created as a hybrid of flowering and weigela Korean.
  • The flowers are carmine-red, shiny, have a light pleasant aroma.
  • This variety is characterized by moderate winter hardiness, needs light shelter for the winter to avoid freezing of the bush.
  • As for the location, it would be better to plant it in a sunny place where there is no stagnation of cold air masses.

With good care, life can reach up to 50 years. Grade, fairly resistant to damage by diseases and pests. You can see the variety in the photo.

Hybrid bloom and Korean Weigel.

  • Shrub is quite large - up to 2 m in height, crown in diameter - up to 2.5 m.
  • As the name suggests, the flowers are pink, they can be pink-white, large.
  • This variety has medium frost resistance and needs light shelter.
  • When choosing a location for planting, pay attention to fertile soils with an acidity of 6-6.5 pH, preferably a bright place, although light penumbra is also possible.

You can see how this variety looks in the photo below.

Weigela hybrid "Eva Ratke"

bright spectacular shrub, as you can see by looking at the photo.

  • This variety in 2002 received the award of the Royal Horticultural Society of Great Britain.
  • Its distinctive feature is the color saturation, increased density of flowers and density of the branches of the bush.
  • It is a slow-growing shrub that blooms twice a year.
  • Flowers are bright red.
  • Loves bright, sunny places, hygrophilous, but make sure that there is no stagnation of water.
  • The variety is characterized by good frost resistance.

Suitable for the formation of low hedges, design borders. May be affected by aphids.

rather large shrub, up to 2, 5 m high and wide spreading crown.

  • It is distinguished by white flowers (in the photo), which, unlike many other varieties of weigela hybrid, do not change their shade during the flowering period.
  • This variety is quite moisture-loving, but does not tolerate stagnant water, it will favorably respond to planting in a sunny place on fertile soil.
  • Average frost resistance, shelter required.

Used in the design of gardens and parks as a single plant, and as a hedge.

Care and reproduction

Weigela Hybrid is a light and heat-loving plant, it will be grateful and will please with its flowering if you find a place in the garden that will be protected from cold northern winds and drafts.

This shrub likes light fertile soil.

Watering. As for watering, the veigela does not equally like both deficiency and excess moisture. Therefore, make sure that the ground around the bush is wet, but the water should not stagnate.

Abundant watering is needed in two cases.

  • The first is the period of the spring awakening of the plant, especially when the winter was of little snow. Then it is advisable to pour 6-10 liters of water under each bush.
  • The second - in the case of dry summer, when the hot dry weather.

Fertilizing fertilizer is best done in early spring.

Crop. One of the mandatory rules for caring for the weigela hybrid is pruning.

  • It is carried out immediately after the first flowering, cutting off branches with faded flowers, as well as all the old branches.

Also, pruning is necessary for both young and 3-5 summer plants for crown formation.

Winter hardiness Weigela Hybrid has poor winter hardiness, therefore it needs preparation.

In winter, the ground around the bushes is covered with fir branches. You can also cover the bushes.

But it should be remembered that the weigel branches are very gentle, and so that they do not break under the weight of the spruce branches that cover it, and in addition also the snow that fell, they are tied together and supported by a support, or a frame.

In the spring, the bush is carefully inspected and pruned damaged branches. Do not worry if the bush is slightly frozen. If you make a sanitary pruning, then he will be all right, he will bloom in time, except that not so abundant.

Hybrid weigela is propagated either by seed or by grafting. It is also possible to just divide the bush. Consider each of these methods.

Seeds are used immediately after collection, as the next year they lose their germination.

  • Sowing is carried out in the spring, cover the dishes (pots, boxes) with film.
  • When there is a second pair of leaves, the plants need to dive.
  • In the summer, boxes with young plants are placed in a garden under a tree with a not particularly thick crown.

This veigela blooms only for 4 years.

Recommended trimming scheme

Remember that it is not always as a result of seed multiplication that you get the same variety.

And if you are engaged in breeding work, and you are interested in the purity of the variety, then use the following method for reproduction.

There are two types of cuttings Weigela for breeding - green and winter. What does it mean?

Green, not yet managed to stiffen, cuttings cut with a sharp knife straight (NOT at an angle, as usual) - based on the characteristics of the leaf system.

  • For cuttings choose branches with two lower leaves, which are then cut off either completely or half, with one interstitial.
  • The cuttings are planted in June, covered with foil or a plastic bottle, often watered. With this method, the survival rate of cuttings is 80-100%.

The survival rate of winter cuttings is much lower. However, if you want to experiment, you can try to grow weigela in this way.

  • For winter, the cutting is taken from a part of the branch, cutting it off under the bud before it blossoms.
  • The stalk is placed in a pot with a mixture of sand and sod land, after rooting, it is fed with mineral fertilizer.

Stages of care for weigela

You can also simply buy weigela seedlings hybrid in the flower market. In this case, follow the simple rules of planting this plant.

Landing. At the place chosen for planting, prepare a pit with dimensions of 50x50 cm; put a drainage at the bottom of it, since the weigela does not like an excess of moisture.

  • It is necessary to plant this shrub so that the root neck is covered with earth.
  • On top of the circle around the circle mulch sawdust or peat.
  • If you plant several weigel bushes, remember that this plant has a sprawling crown, so it is advisable to plant individual bushes at some distance, 3-3.5 m will be optimal.

Stages of care for weigela

It is better to plant weigela in spring, the survival rate of autumn seedlings is very low. But if you bought a sapling in the fall, then plant it in an inclined position, so as to cover most of the crown with earth.

Using Weigela Hybrid in Landscape Design: Practical Recommendations

Growing weigela hybrid can decorate your garden, because it is a very attractive shrub - both with its bright flowers and the thickness of the leaves on the branches.

First, think about the purpose for which you will grow weigela. For decorative leafing purposes (look at the photo, how weigela looks spectacular and without flowers - in the period between the two flowering periods) varieties that bloom less abundantly suit you.

  • We also recommend paying attention to varieties with low frost resistance. If the plant freezes in winter, then after sanitary pruning in the spring, the bush will feel great, but the flowering will be less abundant, and the flowers themselves will be smaller in size and paler in color.
  • Also use another “tricky” trick: weigels love sunny places, but a lot of varieties tolerate light penumbra. If you shade the plant a little more, then it simply blooms not so plentiful and bright, and that is what we need.

If you want to use weigela for flowering purposes, then pay special attention to creating optimal conditions for this plant.

Choose winter-hardy plants, carefully cover the bushes for the winter, spend rejuvenating pruning in the period between flowering periods.

Since weigels consider East Asia as their homeland — Japan, Korea, China — it is entirely appropriate to use this plant in Japanese or any Oriental-style gardens.

Use of weigel for landscaping

  • Weigels also take root well on stony soil, so small bushes are used in the design of stony gardens or rock gardens.
  • If you want to design a mixborder, then in this case, too, you can safely use the weigel, only more decorative and deciduous varieties will look more effective.
  • Low-growing shrubs can draw paths and curbs in the gardens, and from large tall shrubs you can safely create a hedge - it will turn out very nice and impressive - like in this photo.

You can also use weigela to create various garden compositions, combining bushes with various garden furniture (benches, lanterns) or elements of garden decor.

The combination of a tall tree with a wide spreading crown and a weigel shrub and its base looks rather impressive.

Please note that the crown must be precisely sprawling and transmit a sufficient amount of light, otherwise the weigela will simply not take root in such a neighborhood or it will look different from what you would like.

Weigels are also well combined with various coniferous and perennial shrubs.

Weigela hybrid, thanks to its bright and numerous flowers, dense foliage will be a great decoration for your garden, and your guests will be delighted with this wonderful oriental plant, which has already won many fans all over the world.

Types of shrub weigela in the garden (with photo)

Weigela Middendorf (Iv. middendorffiana)

In this species of weygel shrub, single flowers or 2-6 pieces are collected in inflorescences, bell-shaped funnel-shaped, sulfur-yellow with orange spots and dots on the lower lobes. It blooms twice a year, in spring, in the first decade of May, and in the fall. Duration of flowering in Moscow is 25-30 days.

Due to the ability to bloom again, from the beginning of August to the first autumn frosts in late September, the seeds ripen in two terms: in September and October.

As can be seen in the photo, the autumn color of the leaves of a shrub of a weighel of this species appears in early October:

Weigela early (W. rgaesoh)

Beautiful flowering shrub 1.5-2 m tall. The crown is almost spherical, sprawling to old age. The flowers are drooping, solitary or collected 2-3 pieces on the shortened lateral shoots of the current year, funnel-bell-shaped, bright pink outside, purple-red in buds, sometimes white with yellowness. Flowering time: from the end of May to June.

Duration of flowering 10-30 days, on average - 15 days. Autumn leaf color is noticeable from the end of September. Due to the low requirements of the environment, simple care, decorative weigela early became the most popular among other weigels.

Weigela Garden (W. hortensis)

It is a shrub up to 1 m tall. Autumn leaf color appears in October. The flowers are like bells of 3-4 pieces in the inflorescence, developing at the ends of the shoots and in the leaf axils, pinkish-carmine. Mass flowering of the garden weigela is celebrated in Moscow since the third decade of May and, gradually fading, continues until the beginning of July.

Pay attention to the photo - there is also a form with white flowers in the ornamental weigel bush of this species:

Weigela blooming (W. florida)

Shrub up to 3 m tall, crown diameter 3.5 m. The flowers are large, tubular, 2.5-3 cm long, dark pink at the edges and pale pink or white inside, darken when flowering. They are collected in 3-4 pieces in small inflorescences, which are located on the short side shoots. Flowering time: the third decade of May - the beginning of June. Duration of flowering about 20 days. This shrub grows very quickly. The most interesting are the following forms: Purpurea, or Purpurea.

As shown in the photo, this species of weigela has dark pink flowers with a yellow center, beautifully contrasting with the leaves:

It blooms in June and July. White, or “Alba” (“Alba”), with white flowers turning pink when flowering, a dwarf form.

Weigela blooming (W. floribunda)

The height of the shrub is up to 3 m. The flowers are sessile, dark red, later light pink, up to 3 cm in diameter. It blooms in May and June, 2-3 weeks. It grows quickly, but less winter-hardy than weigela blooming. Gracefully curved branches and bright pink or red flowers greatly adorn this shrub.

Darkness ("Darkness") - height is 30-35 cm, diameter of compact, dense, spherical crown is 40-50 cm. It blooms from the end of the bush or 1 m2. Feeding with a mullein is allowed from April to June (0.5 l of solution per bush).

Weigela features

The plant loves moisture and grows quite well in the shade. This erect shrub does not form stolons. The petized opposite leaf sheets do not have stipules, they are serrated or serrated. The length of bell-shaped or funnel-shaped flowers is about 5 centimeters. Flowers solitary or are part of loose inflorescences. They can be painted in cream, carmine-red, pink, yellow and other colors, while often during flowering color changes from a paler shade to a brighter one. The fruits are represented by a double-leaf box, inside which are small seeds.

What time to plant

The best time to land the weigel is spring. In this case, it is necessary to have time to plant the plant before the buds swell, but the earth should already be warm, in which case it will be taken very well. A shrub planted in the autumn dies during the first wintering season.

The place to land is best to choose on an elevation, while it should be protected from drafts and the northern wind, which can cause shedding of flowers and buds. It is better to plant the weigela on the south side of the building. With good lighting, the flowers are very bright, and blooming is plentiful. For planting you need a loose earth with a lot of humus. Suitable loamy or clayey soil neutral or slightly alkaline. It is worth considering that weigela Middendorff (Weigela middendorffiana) can be planted in peaty slightly acidic soil. Planted seedlings must be at least 3 years.

How to plant

The depth of the landing fossa from 30 to 40 centimeters. If the soil is infertile, then the pit should be made deeper, because a layer of nutrient-enriched soil should be laid on the drainage layer (height 15 cm), which can be made of gravel, brick fragments or sand ). Fertilizer should be thoroughly mixed with compost. In order for the sapling to be better taken, its roots can be treated with a substance that stimulates root growth (Viva + or Radifarm).

If the weigel sapling is of medium-sized variety (not higher than 100 centimeters), then a distance of at least 80 centimeters should be left between the bushes, the intervals between high-grade bushes (height up to 250 centimeters) should be from 150 to 200 centimeters. During planting, do not forget to straighten the roots of the seedling, the soil will need to be gradually poured into the hole and tamped in order to eliminate the possibility of void formation. You can only deepen the root neck by 10–20 mm, but it is desirable that when the soil settles after watering, it is flush with the ground. Planted plants should be watered well, and the surface of the soil sprinkled with a layer of mulch.

Caring for Weigela

Growing such a shrub is easy, and even a beginner can handle it. Weigela needs to be watered only during the dry period, and a large amount of water is used (if the tree trunk is mulched, then watering will be more rare). It is also necessary to make timely weeding and loosening of the soil, which is done very carefully with only half of the spade bayonet, otherwise the root system can be damaged. You also need to feed the plant in a timely manner, while if you add nitrophoska and compost in the process of planting in the hole, then the bush will not need additional feedings for 2 years. In the third year at the beginning of spring, weigela needs to be fed, for this purpose full mineral fertilizer is applied to the soil, for example: diammofosku, ammofosku, Kemira-lux or other fertilizers, which include potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen. In the last days of spring or the first - summer, during budding, it is necessary to produce a second dressing, with the need to take phosphate and potash fertilizers (potassium sulphate, superphosphate, etc.). Due to this, the plant will bloom for a long time and abundantly, and the branches will be strengthened, which is good for wintering. The third time the bush is fed during digging in the fall, it takes wood ash (for 1 m2 you need 200 g of top dressing). Can be used for this purpose fertilizer Kemira-autumn, with the dosage should be seen in the instructions.

This shrub blooms 2 times per season. The first lush bloom is observed from the second half of May to mid-June, with flowers appear on the shoots of last year. The second time the shrub blooms in August and blooms until September. At the same time, flowering is less abundant than in springtime, and flowers grow on the shoots of the current year. During flowering, the plant looks very impressive.

How to trim

Weigel, like all shrubs need pruning. Young bushes need pruning only for sanitary purposes. To do this, in early spring, you need to cut off those branches that thicken the plant, as well as sick, injured and damaged by frost. Older plants need formative pruning, it must be done after the weigela has faded for the first time (in the middle of the summer period), while young shoots should not yet grow. It is worth remembering that during the re-flowering flowers appear on the shoots of the current year. In this regard, if you did not carry out formative pruning on time, and new branches began to grow, it is recommended to postpone it until next year. Adult shrubs need a rejuvenating pruning, carried out 1 time in 3 years, and all branches that are more than 3 years old should be cut, and those that remain should be cut by 1/3. In some cases it may be necessary to trim all the branches, after this pruning the weigel is restored very well.

Diseases and pests

Often on this shrub leaf-eating caterpillars and aphids settle. During a long period of heat and drought, thrips or spider mites can live on the plant. However, by the beginning of the drought period, the first bloom is already ending in the weigela. In order to destroy these harmful insects, it is recommended to use such pesticides as: nitrafen, rogue or keltan, but it is worth considering that they harm the environment. There are more harmless means to combat insect pests - these are insecticidal extracts made from plants such as: hot pepper, wormwood, or garlic. If the planted seedlings become yellow and begin to fade, then this is most likely due to the fact that a bear has started in the root system or the larvae of the May beetle have settled. They could get into the ground with compost or humus during planting. To destroy them, it is necessary to water the bush with a solution of aktar or karbofos.

Weigela most often suffers from gray mold, rust, and spotting. In order to get rid of the fungal or bacterial disease, it is necessary to treat the shrub bordeaux liquid (copper sulfate mixed with milk of lime). As a preventive measure, it is possible to treat a plant when leaflets appear with Topsin's solution (3%).

Seed collection

Seed ripening occurs in September, while their collection is carried out in October, after the boxes begin to crack. In order for the seeds not to spill out onto the ground surface, it is necessary to wrap a few pieces of testes in September with gauze cloth and fix it on the branch. After the box is ripe, you need to carefully cut and bring it into the room. There you can remove the gauze and pour the seeds on a newspaper. After the seeds have dried, they should be poured into a bag of paper, on which do not forget to note the name of the plant, its variety and the date when the seeds were collected. They must be placed in a darkened dry place, where they should be stored until the spring period. It should be remembered that the seeds retain good germination only for 1-2 years, while shrubs grown from seeds may not retain the varietal characteristics of the parent plant.

After the end of the leaf fall (in the last days of October or the first - November), it is necessary to cover the tree trunk with a layer of soil, while the height of the mound should be 15 to 20 centimeters. It is recommended to bend the branches to the soil surface and fix them. Above, the bush is covered with a spanbond or roofing felt, while the shelter is pressed down so that it is not blown away by the wind. You can not bend the branches, and tie them with a string or rope, well pulling.Enclose the plant with a mesh of plastic or metal. It is necessary to pour the dry fallen leaves inside the resulting structure. Above the structure you need to warm the covering with a dense material.

Early Weigela, or Weigela Pleasant (Weigela praecox)

Under natural conditions it grows in the Far East. The bush reaches a height of about 200 centimeters. On the surface of the foliage there is pubescence. Crohn spherical shape. The outer part of the flowers is rich pink. The inflorescences consist of 2 or 3 flowers, while they grow on the side shoots of this year. It happens that the pharynx of the flower has a white and yellow color, in the little flowers the flowers are colored purple. Flowering begins in the last days of May and lasts from 10 to 30 days. The variegated variety of weigela variegate causes the greatest interest. On the surface of the green leaf plates are specks of yellow color, in the summer they become a cream color.

Weigela blooming, or Weigela florida (Weigela florida)

In height the bush reaches 300 centimeters. On the surface of the shoots there are 2 rows of hairs. Short-cut sawed leaf plates on the front side have a pubescence located along the central vein, with all the veins on the seamy surface pubescence. The inflorescences consist of 3 or 4 flowers, painted in rich pink color, which unfold in the last days of May. Flowering lasts about 20 days.

Popular forms:

  1. Weigela purple, or weigela red (Weigela Purpurea). The height of the bush is about 150 centimeters, there is a magnificent crown. Leafy plates are brownish-red in color, hot pink flowers have a yellow mouth. Flowering occurs in June and July. The variety Nana Purpurea is very similar to weigela purple, but the bush is smaller in size.
  2. Alba This is a dwarf form. White flowers turn pink when withering.
  3. Variegata. This form is very beautiful and most frost resistant. It has small leaves. Crusiform inflorescences consist of rich pink flowers.
  4. Weigela Pink (Weigela florida Bunge). The outer surface of the flowers is carmine-pink, and the inner one is almost white.
  5. Weigela Victoria (Weigela florida Victoria). The height of the bush is about 100 centimeters. The foliage is brownish-red, and the flowers have a crimson color.

Weigela hybrid (Weigela hybrida)

It has a spreading crown, flowering magnificent. The height of the bush is about 150 centimeters. Fragrant flowers have a funnel-tubular form, they can be part of loose inflorescences or be single. Depending on the variety, the color of flowers may be pink, purple, purple, white, purple-red.

Popular varieties:

  1. Bristol ruby. Appeared variety in 1941 in the United States. The bush can reach a height of 250-300 centimeters, while the diameter of its crown is 350 centimeters. The leaves have a saturated green color. Pink flowers have ruby-red edges, sometimes their middle is colored orange. This fast growing plant begins to bloom in the last days of June.
  2. Red Prince. Variety bred in the United States. Compact bush in height can reach 150 centimeters. It has a spreading crown, drooping branches. Bright red flowers look very beautiful against green leaves.
