It can be replaced, for example, with the T200M engine (9 hp) of the Tula-Tourist scooter or the T200A of the Muravei scooter (14-16 hp). A feature of these engines is high power and an integrated air cooling system that allows the cylinder head not to warm up when operating at low speeds and heavy load. A motor without a cooling system in such conditions will inevitably overheat, which will lead to its rapid breakdown.

Most of the other elements of the walk-behind tractor are also taken from the scooter: part of the frame and suspension of the motor, chains, control cables and handles. Chains are used in increments of 12.7 mm and 15.9 mm. The number of teeth of the sprockets of the output shaft is 11, the running axis is 12, the secondary shaft is 20 and 60.

To connect the body of the motoblock with the steering wheel and the plow, the design provides for the use of three hinges of the regulating and main thrust. The gearshift device is also made independently. A steel pipe is welded to the frame of the walk-behind tractor, an axis is provided at the end of which. A swinging rocker is used on it, which is used to tension the gear cables going to the gearbox. A piece of pipe, which is used as a gearshift knob, is welded to the beam.

An important feature of the Arkhipov walk-behind tractor is unusual running wheels, round and flat, resembling circular saw blades. Only instead of teeth they have grousers. Such wheels adhere well to the soil; they do not compact it during passage. On the contrary, when the lugs rotate, additional loosening of the beds occurs. The wheels are cut from sheet steel S = 10-12 mm using a gas cutter. Lugs are performed in accordance with the drawings. Instead of such wheels, ordinary car tires are also suitable for a motoblock, but they will have less traction with the soil and therefore slip during operation of the motoblock.

Assembly technology for elements of such a walk-behind tractor:

  1. An asterisk is welded onto the running shaft, housings with bearings No. 307 and No. 308, overrunning couplings acting as a differential, are installed.
  2. Mount the running wheels and frame.
  3. Telescopic traction, steering wheel and plow are fixed on the frame.
  4. Two arcuate pipes from the scooter frame connect the frame of the walk-behind tractor with a part of the engine mount.
  5. Install the fuel tank by placing it between the pipes.
  6. A bracket is welded to the frame, at the end of which a steel axis Ø36 mm, 15 cm long, is transversely arranged.
  7. A gasoline engine with a suspension bracket is mounted on the axle, and then fixed to the side curved tubes of the frame.

During the operation of a conventional home-made walk-behind tractor, the plow often pushes to the side due to the considerable resistance of the plowed soil. The plowman has to make an effort to keep a straight line of the furrow. Arkhipov's motoblock is devoid of this drawback, since the axis of the plow is inclined to the direction of movement. When plowing, the unit is slightly turned to the left and this compensates for a possible skid.

Plowing the first furrow is the most responsible action. It should turn out perfectly smooth, and for this, the direction of movement has to be set by the plow itself, rigidly connected to the control handles. By turning them, the operator changes the direction of movement. For example, if you want to turn the unit to the right, then you need to tilt the handles to the left. The plow fixed in the ground will not be able to shift to the left, it is held in one position, so the rod turns the car to the right. When plowing the following furrows, the management is much easier, since the wheel will pass along the plowed furrow, copying its direction.

We arrange canopies and additional functions

Homemade Arkhipov walk-behind tractor can become a reliable assistant in the work on the land. As a processing tool for it, not only a plow is used, but also a cultivating cutter, harrow, rake. All these tools are fixed to the tractor with two bolts, just like a plow.

For planting potatoes, you can use the cultivator, having previously removed the dumps from it. Having fixed it on the motor-block, furrows are carried out. After the tubers are laid, the dumps on the cultivator are put back and pass between the furrows. Dig the grown crop using a special potato digger. Unit design features

The motor-block device is a two-wheeled self-propelled machine equipped with an engine removed from the VP-150M scooter. The reason for choosing this particular engine was the fact that it has such a constructive solution, due to which forced cooling of the cylinder head by air is carried out.

Separately, the designer manufactured a U-shaped frame welded from pipes and a wheel axle machined on a lathe. He also made 3 homemade joints for the main and control rods. They will be used as connecting elements between the walk-behind tractor, its steering wheel and plow.

A steel pipe is attached to the unit’s frame by welding, ending with an axis, which is necessary for tensioning the cables going to the engine gearbox. The tension itself is carried out by means of a rocking beam, the gearshift knob of which is a welded piece of steel pipe.

The pitch of the chains used to create the device is 12.7 mm and 15.9 mm. The number of teeth of the sprockets: the output shaft is 11, the secondary shaft is 20 and 60, the axle is 40.

What exactly is this design good for?

There are more than a dozen analogs of such a model, but in comparison with them the original model of the Kaluga master walk-behind tractor has a number of undeniable advantages.

  • Swivel joint. Processing tools and tractors of most of these models have a rigid connection, which complicates the maneuvering of the unit and thereby complicates the work with it. The details of this agricultural unit are connected by hinges. This makes it possible in the process of work, if necessary, to change the direction of movement without removing the plow from the furrow.
  • The offset of the axis to the direction of travel. Many owners, when processing soil using a walk-behind tractor, were faced with such difficulty that, in the process of moving forward under the influence of soil resistance, the unit leads to the side. To align the furrows, a lot of effort should be made. To compensate for such a skid, the master placed the axis of the plow at a slight angle in the direction of movement. When plowing, the construction is slightly turned to the left. The desired position can always be adjusted with three traction joints.
  • The level of a given depth of plowing. If in other models the plowing depth is maintained by lowering or raising the plow, then when working with this walk-behind tractor it is performed automatically. Regulation is carried out by changing the angle of the plow with respect to the furrow. The design is equipped with a field board, which acts as a lifting force when burying a plow. If, on the contrary, the ploughshare appears above the surface of the earth, then its angle of attack instantly increases, under the influence of which it again plunges into the soil to a predetermined depth.

Assembly of the structure begins with the arrangement of the running shaft. For this, a housing with bearings is attached to it, an asterisk is welded, and overrunning couplings are mounted, which in the process of work will carry out the function of the differential. After that, the design is equipped with wheels and a frame. A telescopic rod, a plow and a steering wheel are mounted on a fixed frame.

Now about the wheels. Thanks to their special shape, they adhere better to the soil and are not clogged with soil. Unlike rubber, these wheels practically do not compact the soil, but, on the contrary, loosen it.

Queue for the engine. An arm with a transverse steel axis 0 36 and a length of 150 mm at the end is cantially welded to the U-shaped frame on the left. The engine, together with the suspension, is hung on this axis and attached to the arcuate tubes of the frame. The secondary shaft is installed in its place, and the chains are pulled. Compared to other structures of this type, the Arkhipov walk-behind tractor has a number of design advantages. Before him, tractors and processing tools were connected rigidly among themselves, which made it difficult to turn. Arkhipov, on the other hand, came up with a joint that allows you to “hold” the furrow or change the direction of movement within small limits without removing the plow from the ground.

This element also provides another advantage - the constancy of a given plowing depth without the use of additional effort. The necessary depth of plowing is supported not by raising and lowering the plow, but by changing its angle with respect to the furrow, which happens automatically: if the plow begins to dig, then the lifting force created by the field board acts on it, if the ploughshare comes out of the soil, its angle of attack increases, and it is again buried in the soil to a predetermined depth, providing a stable balance.

During operation, the plow, overcoming the resistance of the soil, often puts aside, and the plowman working with a rigid plow has to make considerable efforts to level the furrow. Arkhipov eliminated this inconvenience: the axis of his plow is located at some angle to the direction of movement. This position is regulated by three traction joints. When plowing, the walk-behind tractor is slightly turned to the left, which compensates for skidding.

When carrying out the first furrow (the most crucial moment), the plow itself needs to maintain a direct direction, because the control levers are rigidly connected to it, and not to the walk-behind tractor. When they are rotated with little effort, the entire device changes its direction of movement. Suppose you need to turn right. Plowman deflects arms at. opposite side. And since the plow cannot move there - it is as if fixed in the ground, then the traction, following the handles, turns the walk-behind tractor to the right.
On the second and subsequent furrows, control is simplified, since the right wheel goes along the furrow like a copier.

The cultivator, the harrow and the rake are set with the regulating rod exactly in the middle of the rut. Fasten with the same two bolts as the plow. The brackets of these guns are slightly deployed in a vertical plane to compensate for the angle at which the plow was mounted. The bracket is welded to the harrow vertically in the middle. A plowman can control such a harrow during movement, dropping one edge or another edge if necessary and breaking up large clods of earth.

On uneven ground, the harrow does not respond to various inclinations of the walk-behind tractor. (And with a tight connection with him, she copies them, leaving flaws).
For planting potatoes Arkhipov uses a cultivator with removed dumps. Having set it in place of the plow, he draws furrows in the ground and lays tubers in them. Preparing to create a homemade

To make a homemade agricultural machine - craftsmen use improvised materials and outdated components of motorcycles. The front fork and other elements are cut off from the previous design so that they do not interfere with the installation of attachments on the future cultivator. When designing a home-made motor-cultivator, some are driven by a motor scooter or moped. But to assemble a more efficient motoblock, the strength of the engine of the moped will not be enough. It will require a 16-18-horsepower diesel engine from a motorcycle. It is "customized" to the desired parameters, conducting a series of alterations.

First, they rebuild the cooling system into active air, in order to improve the technical performance of motor vehicles. This is easily done using a 12-volt electric engine with a small iron impeller. Along the way, the valve is replaced with a flap valve, which helps to facilitate start-up, increase traction and reduce fuel consumption.

The prepared engine is mounted in rigid clamps. They are pre-welded to the front of the homemade frame, then securely tightened with bolts (the whole process is well shown in the video).

Be sure to make sure that the clamps cover the neck of the output shaft of the diesel engine of the motoblock and hold it firmly.

A lever is attached to the manual gearbox of the homemade device, which is easy to make from an iron bar by welding a ball at the end. The length of the handle is left such that, being behind the control levers of a walk-behind tractor or a cultivator, you can easily reach it.

Next, an air-purifying filter is assembled for home-made use of available materials, for example, a tin can, a metal tube. Then prepare the fuel tank of a home-made motor unit. You can make it yourself from any sealed container or take it from a broken motorized wheelchair.


For a home-made diesel walk-behind tractor, however, like a motor cultivator, you will need chains, sprockets, a transition shaft. They are mainly borrowed from decommissioned motorcycle, auto, agricultural machinery. Regular readers of our magazine are already familiar with the Kaluga amateur designer V. N. Arkhipov, the author of a lightweight and productive walk-behind tractor (see MK, No. 6, 1982). However, Valentin Nikolaevich believes that working with him is not so simple as it might seem: walking on plowed land, controlling a walk-behind tractor and simultaneously mounted implements, is quite tiring and not everyone can do it. That is why Arkhipov took up the construction of a four-wheeled mini-tractor in order to “saddle” it: to carry out various agricultural work while on it. The attempt was a success, a kind of wheelchair appeared - the Kalujanin-14 mini-tractor. Not so long ago, the author represented him in the popular television program "You Can Do It" and received the approval of a competent jury. Today, at the request of viewers and our readers, the magazine publishes drawings according to which it is possible to build the same “iron horse” - an assistant in your household and garden plots.

Arkhipov also made a whole arsenal of mounted and trailed implements: now the Kalujanin can plow, harrow, spud, cultivate, plow, and carry a trailer. I’ll start with a list of the basic blanks that you need to have before you get started. You will need a metal sheet 4X200X600 mm and two sheets 1X300X800 mm, strips 3X25X1800 mm, pipes Ø48, 38, 25.4, 26.8, 21 mm (lengths of 6000, 1200, 1000, 1500, 4000 mm, respectively), rods of Ø50 and 100 mm by 800 mm long.

Of the finished parts and assemblies (purchased, from discarded agricultural machinery), sprockets with 13, 20, 54 teeth and 19.05 mm pitch and corresponding chains, a pair of pulleys from reel mowers for brake clutches, wheels or metal disks for them Ø600 mm are required. The Kaluzhanin frame is welded from pipes of the diameters listed above. In its front part there is a footrest serving as a support for the driver’s legs, a transverse corner for fastening the friction clutch handles and metal strips for installing the seat from the back are welded on top, and wheel bearing housings from the bottom. In addition, on the lower power tubes, pillows of bearing housings for the axle shafts of the differential and the intermediate shaft, brackets of the axis of the rocker arm of the mounted tools were delivered. On the rear pipe there are kerchiefs for fastening the main gear and a vertical bracket on which the engine is suspended on an axle-bolt: in front it rests on a transverse corner. Superimposing on the last adjusting washers, you can slightly change the position of the engine (its inclination), which regulates the chain tension from the output shaft of the engine to the eye gear. Behind the seatback is a gas tank (from the Electron scooter), fuel is fed by gravity.

All four wheels of the mini-tractor are driving: the rotation on them is transmitted by chains through the main gear and the intermediate gear. The drive axles are equipped with cardan joints, friction discs and sprockets (Z = 13). The outer ends of the axle shafts are embedded in bearing housings in bearings on the frame. On the shafts of the intermediate gears (there are two of them - one on each side of the mini-tractor) there is a large, 54 tooth receiving sprocket and two 13 teeth transmitting rotation to the front and rear wheels. The shafts are inserted at one end into the bearings of the support, at the other into the bearings of the consoles, the latter being welded to the front tube of the frame. The axles of the wheels have one driven sprocket (Z = 20). All connections are keyed.

Thanks to the main gear with a differential, it is possible to individually lock either the right or left wheels and, as a result, turn in one direction or another. Locking is carried out by a handle with a belt lining using friction discs: pressing against the disc, it slows down the rotation of the axle shaft. The handle is bent out of the pipe: it can be rotated on an axis installed in the corner consoles of the frame. At its end, a support plate is welded under the plate - a segment of the drive belt, fixed through it and the pipe with two bolts. Many people think that if you put a clamping belt completely covering the pulley on the friction clutch, then braking will be more effective. However, as practice has shown, touching the disk in one place is quite enough. The tape is often "grabbed."

The wheels are placed on the axles, supported by bearings. On the one side of these bodies are the wheels themselves, on the other - driven sprockets (Z = 20). Due to the fact that the drives are spaced apart on the drives of the intermediate gearbox, it is necessary to install the followers in different planes. This made it possible to manufacture bearing housings (respectively, half shafts) of different lengths: front - 110 mm, and rear - 85 mm. There is no additional chain tension here: sufficient coverage of the sprockets helps them. If the chains stretch over time, you only need to shorten them - remove a couple of links. Thus, in the entire transmission, only the chain coming from the engine output shaft is regulated.

The wheels are made of metal discs Ø600 mm and a thickness of 8 mm. Rings (through 70 mm) from strips of 6X30X200 mm are welded onto them around the circumference: they facilitate turning and at the same time help to ensure sufficient traction - the wheels do not skid even on ice when snow is being cleared, they do not “grease” even when working on wet soil.

Agricultural equipment is hung on the beam, passing under the frame of a mini tractor. Cultivators, harrows, rakes are usually positioned so that they fall in the middle of the rut.But with a plow more difficult. The point here is that the resistance of the plow when plowing turns the car around - after all, its wheels in this case go on the furrow or virgin soil on one side, and on the already plowed land on the other. Therefore, depending on the working conditions (soil density, plowing depth, etc.), it is necessary to shift the plow. And how much - this is determined already, as they say, in practice. In order to be able to rearrange the plow without any particular difficulties, I put the beam on the sleeve, which “walks” left and right across the frame on the axis. The attachment point of the plow should be at the level of the axles of the wheels. Otherwise, a certain unfolding moment arises in the vertical plane and the car will “stand on its hind legs” or, conversely, overload the front end. Another. Obviously, the furrow during plowing should be equally deep along its entire length. But how hard it is to achieve, moving along all the irregularities of the field!

It is easier to ensure uniform plowing at the Kalujanin than on tractors with implements mounted directly on the stern, when any tilt of the machine affects the quality of the tillage. At my car, the suspension point of the plow rocker arm is located on the central axis of the base, and it is not fixed in the vertical plane and can "swing". Therefore, no trim affects the depth of the furrow - the depth of the plow will be almost constant. I also advise you to put a seat in the center of the tractor - the driver will be much more comfortable: less pitching. Indeed, the "excitement" when moving along bumps and potholes is quite noticeable.
