To cultivate a site with a large area on which a significant part of the territory is reserved for the garden, using only improvised tools is not an easy task. Work on loosening, digging, and also weeding the garden manually takes a lot of time and effort. It is good when there is an opportunity to purchase a walk-behind tractor, which will become an indispensable assistant on the site. But to facilitate work on the ground, you can and making a walk-behind tractor with your own hands.
What can you build on your own?
The factory-made motoblocks market offers customers a fairly wide range of products for every taste. However, the prices for such agricultural machinery can not be overcome by many. Therefore, in vegetable gardens in rural areas, you can often find a home-made walk-behind tractor, which is almost as good as a factory analogue in operational parameters.
Creating universal designs, craftsmen most often use parts of old motorcycles and scrap metal
Morally obsolete models of motorcycles often serve as the basis for the manufacture of various home-made products and small-scale mechanization tools useful in the household.
Since self-made motoblocks are often created from improvised old materials, the Druzhba motor, known to many, is often used as the engine of the unit.
On the basis of self-made motoblocks, craftsmen create tools no less significant in agriculture, for example: plows, as well as hillers for hilling corn or potatoes
One of these masters is the inventor Valentin Arkhipov, who is the author of the manufacture of a number of useful devices and the construction of all kinds of household equipment.
A talented designer created a multifunctional device with which you can not only plow and harrow the land, but also plant, cultivate tuber crops, as well as harvest and rake tops
Therefore, when thinking about how to make a walk-behind tractor with your own hands, it is better to opt for this proven and successfully used option. Anyone can handle a simple and easy to use agricultural unit.
Does it make sense to make a homemade walk-behind tractor?
The indisputable advantage of home-made walk-behind tractors is their price, which is practically absent. Consumables are either already initially on the farm from a masterful owner, or purchased from neighbors for a nominal fee. Motor-blocks are assembled from parts of old chainsaws, mopeds, motorcycles, agricultural machinery. Despite this, the end result is often above all praise. In terms of reliability, functionality and convenience, such machines are not inferior to factory counterparts.
A home-made walk-behind tractor, the main elements of which are taken from the old Minsk motorcycle
We suggest you evaluate the simplicity of the device of a rather well-known home-made walk-behind tractor, designed by Kaluga craftsman V. Arkhipov. Data on how to make a walk-behind tractor according to Arkhipov’s project was published for the first time in 1982 in the magazine Modeler-Designer. The project has gained immense popularity, has been recognized by professional designers and craftsmen. We can say that even now Arkhipov’s invention is an example of an ideal home-made walk-behind tractor with many useful functions.
Homemade Arkhipov walk-behind tractor combines the simplest structure, high functionality and reliability
The main structural elements of the Arkhipov walk-behind tractor
Arkhipov's motoblock is a gas-powered car with a boot for carrying goods and a suspension for agricultural implements (plow, cultivator, harrow, rake, etc.). The main element that ensures the operation of the unit is the engine. In the original project of Arkhipov, the VP-150M motor (7 hp) was used, taken from the Vyatka scooter. It can be replaced, for example, with the T200M engine (9 hp) of the Tula-Tourist scooter or the T200A of the Muravei scooter (14-16 hp). A feature of these engines is high power and an integrated air cooling system that allows the cylinder head not to warm up when operating at low speeds and heavy load. A motor without a cooling system in such conditions will inevitably overheat, which will lead to its rapid breakdown.

Most of the other elements of the walk-behind tractor are also taken from the scooter: part of the frame and suspension of the motor, chains, control cables and handles. Chains are used in increments of 12.7 mm and 15.9 mm. The number of teeth of the sprockets of the output shaft is 11, the running axis is 12, the secondary shaft is 20 and 60.

The remaining parts are made independently. The wheel axle is machined from the fittings, the U-shaped frame and the trunk are made of pipes with a diameter of Ø60 mm by welding.
The design of the frame of a self-made motoblock Arkhipova
Trunk device from pipes (you can use a corner)
To connect the body of the motoblock with the steering wheel and the plow, the design provides for the use of three hinges of the regulating and main thrust. The gearshift device is also made independently. A steel pipe is welded to the frame of the walk-behind tractor, an axis is provided at the end of which. A swinging rocker is used on it, which is used to tension the gear cables going to the gearbox. A piece of pipe, which is used as a gearshift knob, is welded to the beam.
An important feature of the Arkhipov walk-behind tractor is unusual running wheels, round and flat, resembling circular saw blades. Only instead of teeth they have grousers. Such wheels adhere well to the soil; they do not compact it during passage. On the contrary, when the lugs rotate, additional loosening of the beds occurs. The wheels are cut from sheet steel S = 10-12 mm using a gas cutter. Lugs are performed in accordance with the drawings. Instead of such wheels, ordinary car tires are also suitable for a motoblock, but they will have less traction with the soil and therefore slip during operation of the motoblock.

Assembly technology for elements of such a walk-behind tractor:
- An asterisk is welded onto the running shaft, housings with bearings No. 307 and No. 308, overrunning couplings acting as a differential, are installed.
- Mount the running wheels and frame.
- Telescopic traction, steering wheel and plow are fixed on the frame.
- Two arcuate pipes from the scooter frame connect the frame of the walk-behind tractor with a part of the engine mount.
- Install the fuel tank by placing it between the pipes.
- A bracket is welded to the frame, at the end of which a steel axis Ø36 mm, 15 cm long, is transversely arranged.
- A gasoline engine with a suspension bracket is mounted on the axle, and then fixed to the side curved tubes of the frame.
- According to the drawings set the secondary shaft.
- Stretch control cables and chains.

Some features of working with such an aggregate
Working with a homemade Arkhipov walk-behind tractor is easy and convenient. This is primarily due to the use of articulation between the tractor and the processing canopies. The rigid connection used in most agricultural home-made models makes rotation difficult. While the movable hinges allow you to change the direction of movement of the walk-behind tractor, without pulling the processing tool (plow, harrow) from the ground. Thus, less physical effort is spent, and the furrow remains flat.
Arkhipov's motoblock, thanks to the maneuverability and reasonableness of the design, is surprisingly easy to drive
The depth of plowing is maintained constant without additional efforts of the operator of the walk-behind tractor. There is no need to lower or raise the plow; just change its angle of inclination with respect to the work surface. If the plow suddenly begins to go deeper into the furrow more than it should be, then the lifting force from the field board automatically starts acting on it. If the ploughshare rises from the furrow, then its angle of attack increases, plowing the plow back into the soil. This ensures a stable furrow depth and balance of the unit itself.
[include title = "YAN - in the text"]
During the operation of a conventional home-made walk-behind tractor, the plow often pushes to the side due to the considerable resistance of the plowed soil. The plowman has to make an effort to keep a straight line of the furrow. Arkhipov's motoblock is devoid of this drawback, since the axis of the plow is inclined to the direction of movement. When plowing, the unit is slightly turned to the left and this compensates for a possible skid.
Plowing the first furrow is the most responsible action. It should turn out perfectly smooth, and for this, the direction of movement has to be set by the plow itself, rigidly connected to the control handles. By turning them, the operator changes the direction of movement. For example, if you want to turn the unit to the right, then you need to tilt the handles to the left. The plow fixed in the ground will not be able to shift to the left, it is held in one position, so the rod turns the car to the right. When plowing the following furrows, the management is much easier, since the wheel will pass along the plowed furrow, copying its direction.
We arrange canopies and additional functions
Homemade Arkhipov walk-behind tractor can become a reliable assistant in the work on the land. As a processing tool for it, not only a plow is used, but also a cultivating cutter, harrow, rake. All these tools are fixed to the tractor with two bolts, just like a plow.
For planting potatoes, you can use the cultivator, having previously removed the dumps from it. Having fixed it on the motor-block, furrows are carried out. After the tubers are laid, the dumps on the cultivator are put back and pass between the furrows. Dig the grown crop using a special potato digger. Potato tops, mowed grass or weeds can be removed with a rake canopy.
Potato digger, plow, spade blade - all this can be used as attachments for a home-made walk-behind tractor
In addition to land work, the Arkhipov walk-behind tractor can also be adapted for cleaning the site. For example, securing a bulldozer knife on a machine, we get an effective snow blower. And installing a roller with a brush and an additional sprocket is an excellent “electric broom” for sweeping garden paths.
Arkhipov's motoblock is a device that will successfully replace you with an expensive factory-made unit. He will cope with his role 100%: it will allow you to cultivate the land as soon as possible and save you from hard physical labor.
In addition to the Arkhipov walk-behind tractor, there are many other home-made models. Look at the operation of one such unit with a mounted potato digger - this is a truly ingenious invention, the device of which is shown in sufficient detail in the video:
Unit design features
The motor-block device is a two-wheeled self-propelled machine equipped with an engine removed from the VP-150M scooter. The reason for choosing this particular engine was the fact that it has such a constructive solution, due to which forced cooling of the cylinder head by air is carried out.
Such a motor from a scooter is able to operate at the lowest speeds at fairly high loads
For the construction of the motoblock, the master used control cables taken from the scooter, engine mounts, as well as a double arc of the frame, handle and chain. The remaining structural details were industrial production
Separately, the designer manufactured a U-shaped frame welded from pipes and a wheel axle machined on a lathe. He also made 3 homemade joints for the main and control rods. They will be used as connecting elements between the walk-behind tractor, its steering wheel and plow.
A steel pipe is attached to the unit’s frame by welding, ending with an axis, which is necessary for tensioning the cables going to the engine gearbox. The tension itself is carried out by means of a rocking beam, the gearshift knob of which is a welded piece of steel pipe.
The pitch of the chains used to create the device is 12.7 mm and 15.9 mm. The number of teeth of the sprockets: the output shaft is 11, the secondary shaft is 20 and 60, the axle is 40.
What exactly is this design good for?
There are more than a dozen analogs of such a model, but in comparison with them the original model of the Kaluga master walk-behind tractor has a number of undeniable advantages.
- Swivel joint. Processing tools and tractors of most of these models have a rigid connection, which complicates the maneuvering of the unit and thereby complicates the work with it. The details of this agricultural unit are connected by hinges. This makes it possible in the process of work, if necessary, to change the direction of movement without removing the plow from the furrow.
- The offset of the axis to the direction of travel. Many owners, when processing soil using a walk-behind tractor, were faced with such difficulty that, in the process of moving forward under the influence of soil resistance, the unit leads to the side. To align the furrows, a lot of effort should be made. To compensate for such a skid, the master placed the axis of the plow at a slight angle in the direction of movement. When plowing, the construction is slightly turned to the left. The desired position can always be adjusted with three traction joints.
- The level of a given depth of plowing. If in other models the plowing depth is maintained by lowering or raising the plow, then when working with this walk-behind tractor it is performed automatically. Regulation is carried out by changing the angle of the plow with respect to the furrow. The design is equipped with a field board, which acts as a lifting force when burying a plow. If, on the contrary, the ploughshare appears above the surface of the earth, then its angle of attack instantly increases, under the influence of which it again plunges into the soil to a predetermined depth.
Step-by-step device assembly technology
Assembly of the structure begins with the arrangement of the running shaft. For this, a housing with bearings is attached to it, an asterisk is welded, and overrunning couplings are mounted, which in the process of work will carry out the function of the differential. After that, the design is equipped with wheels and a frame. A telescopic rod, a plow and a steering wheel are mounted on a fixed frame.
The main elements of the running shaft: 1 - shaft, 2 - sprocket, 3 - cover, 4 - bearing housing, 5 - bearing pad, 6 - bearing No. 308, 7 - overrunning clutch housing, 8 - axis of the dog, 9 - dog, 10 - ratchet, 11 - bearing No. 307, 12 - washers, 13 - wheel, 14 - dog spring
Agricultural walk-behind tractor is equipped with special wheels, which, unlike rubber counterparts, are able to provide better traction.
Such metal wheels are not clogged with earth. In contact with the soil, they do not compact it, but rather loosen it
Two arcuate pipes are used to connect the unit frame with the engine mount and the frame of the scooter itself.Between them there is a place for a fuel tank.
To equip the engine, a bracket is used, ending with a steel axis 150 mm long. The bracket is welded cantilever to the U-shaped frame of the structure. A motor with suspension is suspended on the axis itself. The assembled structure is connected to the arcuate arches of the frame. Only after this is the secondary shaft mounted, the control cables pulled and the chains pulled.

On the running shaft are installed: an asterisk (it is welded), a housing with bearings, freewheels, acting as a differential, wheels, then a frame. A telescopic rod with a steering wheel and a plow is attached to the frame.

Now about the wheels. Thanks to their special shape, they adhere better to the soil and are not clogged with soil. Unlike rubber, these wheels practically do not compact the soil, but, on the contrary, loosen it.

Control cables are pulled.

Compared to other structures of this type, the Arkhipov walk-behind tractor has a number of design advantages. Before him, tractors and processing tools were connected rigidly among themselves, which made it difficult to turn. Arkhipov, on the other hand, came up with a joint that allows you to “hold” the furrow or change the direction of movement within small limits without removing the plow from the ground.
Fig. 9. Connecting elements:
1 - main thrust, 2 - regulatory thrust.
This element also provides another advantage - the constancy of a given plowing depth without the use of additional effort. The necessary depth of plowing is supported not by raising and lowering the plow, but by changing its angle with respect to the furrow, which happens automatically: if the plow begins to dig, then the lifting force created by the field board acts on it, if the ploughshare comes out of the soil, its angle of attack increases, and it is again buried in the soil to a predetermined depth, providing a stable balance.
During operation, the plow, overcoming the resistance of the soil, often puts aside, and the plowman working with a rigid plow has to make considerable efforts to level the furrow. Arkhipov eliminated this inconvenience: the axis of his plow is located at some angle to the direction of movement. This position is regulated by three traction joints. When plowing, the walk-behind tractor is slightly turned to the left, which compensates for skidding.
When carrying out the first furrow (the most crucial moment), the plow itself needs to maintain a direct direction, because the control levers are rigidly connected to it, and not to the walk-behind tractor. When they are rotated with little effort, the entire device changes its direction of movement. Suppose you need to turn right. Plowman deflects arms at. opposite side. And since the plow cannot move there - it is as if fixed in the ground, then the traction, following the handles, turns the walk-behind tractor to the right.
On the second and subsequent furrows, control is simplified, since the right wheel goes along the furrow like a copier.
The cultivator, the harrow and the rake are set with the regulating rod exactly in the middle of the rut. Fasten with the same two bolts as the plow. The brackets of these guns are slightly deployed in a vertical plane to compensate for the angle at which the plow was mounted. The bracket is welded to the harrow vertically in the middle. A plowman can control such a harrow during movement, dropping one edge or another edge if necessary and breaking up large clods of earth.
On uneven ground, the harrow does not respond to various inclinations of the walk-behind tractor. (And with a tight connection with him, she copies them, leaving flaws).
For planting potatoes Arkhipov uses a cultivator with removed dumps. Having set it in place of the plow, he draws furrows in the ground and lays tubers in them. Then he puts the dumps in place and smells the tubers, releasing the cultivator between the furrows. In the same way sprouted plantings spud.
The cultivator can dig and plow crops. The capture width is changed by dumps.
The tops left after harvesting, as well as the missing potatoes, are harvested with a harrow or rake. By the way, it’s convenient to rake, by rake, in the heaps of the cut grass.
In addition to agricultural work, the Arkhipov walk-behind tractor is used, in particular, for snow removal. Additionally, only a small bulldozer knife is installed. You can sweep the sidewalk with an extra sprocket and a roller with a round brush.
The best design of a do-it-yourself walk-behind tractor
Homemade Arkhipov walk-behind tractor It has a very simple, but at the same time convenient and reliable design, time-tested (designed in the 1980s). But, despite its simplicity, it has several advantages: thanks to the articulated telescopic connection of the power plant and the plow, harrow or other processing tools, the walk-behind tractor is easy to control (even a child can handle it). Because to change the direction of movement it is not necessary to pull the plow out of the soil, with a little effort to give the desired direction to the walk-behind tractor itself. Of course, it was done with a bias on plowing, but they can also harrow, cultivate, plant and dig potatoes and even carry goods on the trunk. The special design of the plow and the specific scheme of its attachment make it possible to plow the land without special physical exertion. Plow for a homemade walk-behind tractor equipped with a field board, which does not allow him to fall more than the established depth of plowing, and the angle of attack will not allow him to go to the ground. The displacement of the axis of the plow slightly to the left through the design of its fastening compensates for the lateral force that occurs when working on other walk-behind tractors, leading them to the side from the direction of plowing. Motoblock construction scheme saturated with thoughtful features of the device, especially in the details. The choice of the engine (from the VP-150M scooter) is due to the presence of forced air cooling, which prevents overheating at low speeds and increases the durability of its work. Used original wheel design It allows you to loosen and cultivate the soil during the movement of the walk-behind tractor and is quite simple for making it yourself at home (the wheels are easy to cut from steel sheet with a thickness of 8-10 mm). Such simple but well-tuned solutions in motoblock device Arkhipov made him one of the best for DIY, versatile and easy to assemble, very convenient to use and reliable in use.

The best motor-block for a site to 10 hundred parts
The article talks about the difference between a walk-behind tractor and a cultivator, the principle of choosing a walk-behind tractor, as well as the benefits of choosing a Russian brand. The best walk-behind tractors for a plot of up to 10 acres are compared in terms of power and other characteristics. An example of a video about motor blocks of the Neva brand is given. The result is a model of the best and most reliable walk-behind tractor and the profitability of such a choice.
How can I upgrade a homemade walk-behind tractor?
Arkhipov's motoblock is multifunctional. It can be used as a plow or cultivator. To do this, it is enough to replace removable parts for the plow with parts with removed dumps for the cultivator. The walk-behind tractor will deepen the furrows into the ground and lay potato tubers in them. To smell tubers, you just need to install the dumps in place and walk the unit between the rows planted.
By the same principle, sprouted plants can also be spudded. You can learn more about how to independently construct a hiller for a walk-behind tractor from the material: https://diz-cafe.com/tech/okuchnik-svoimi-rukami.html
The agricultural unit is also convenient for harvesting. Using different dumps, you can change the width of the grip. The unit is also good because it is able to collect missed potatoes and the tops of plants remaining after harvesting. For these purposes, it is equipped with a rake or harrow.
The universal design can be used not only for agricultural work. In the winter, it is successfully used for snow removal. A faithful assistant will come in handy for cleaning the paths of the house territory. By installing a roller with a round brush and an additional sprocket on the walk-behind tractor, the owner will facilitate the work of cleaning the sidewalks.
DIY do-it-yourself walk-behind tractor
Land treatment requires tremendous physical effort. The need to use special equipment is obvious. The owner of the land becomes a choice: to buy or rent special equipment? An alternative is to make a walk-behind tractor with your own hands.
An acceptable option that looks extravagant, but will help save money and at the same time get a home-made walk-behind tractor that will facilitate the implementation of agricultural work.
How to make a walk-behind tractor and attachments to it with your own hands
Manually cultivate land for a long and time-consuming, it is better to take in the assistants a mechanical device - a walk-behind tractor or a cultivator. It can be purchased at the store, as well as made by hand. To buy a factory device you will need a lot of money, but homemade work will cost much cheaper, but of course it will require a lot of free time.
To assemble it and, as a result, get full-fledged small-sized agricultural machinery, you will need components, tools, basic skills and, of course, patience.
Preparing to create a homemade
To make a homemade agricultural machine - craftsmen use improvised materials and outdated components of motorcycles. So, the basis of a motoblock is often a chainsaw, scooter or moped, and when you need to get a powerful and more functional unit - an outdated model of a motorcycle (Sunrise, Java, Minsk).
Before proceeding with the assembly of a walk-behind tractor or a cultivator, they watch thematic videos on the Internet, look for the necessary information in magazines and other publications. Then they prepare the tool and material, develop sketches and drawings, which clearly depict all the functioning organs of the homemade product, including the power and chassis, control and aggregation systems. The drawing below shows what the standard design of a one-wheel motor cultivator looks like.
Fig. 1. Homemade cultivator device

It will be useful to make the kinematic scheme of homemade work, reflecting in it the order of interaction of working mechanisms and showing how the transmission is organized.
To make a lightweight cultivator or a heavier walk-behind tractor - use the following tool:
- electric drill with a set of drills,
- grinder and discs for metal,
- keys (open-end wrenches, ring spanners),
- welding machine,
Material for homemade work are high-strength channels, steel plates and pipes.
A home-made frame for a walk-behind tractor or a motor-cultivator is made welded, but at the same time very durable, since all component parts of the self-made will be fitted to it later. For the construction of the frame, iron pipes or channels are used.
Sometimes, to assemble a home-made walk-behind tractor or motor-cultivator, they use a converted motorcycle frame.

The front fork and other elements are cut off from the previous design so that they do not interfere with the installation of attachments on the future cultivator. A self-made mechanism for coupling the cultivator with equipment, a trailed trolley is fastened back with welding. How to make the hitch yourself, you should look at the video.
When designing a home-made motor-cultivator, some are driven by a motor scooter or moped. But to assemble a more efficient motoblock, the strength of the engine of the moped will not be enough. It will require a 16-18-horsepower diesel engine from a motorcycle. It is "customized" to the desired parameters, conducting a series of alterations.
First, they rebuild the cooling system into active air, in order to improve the technical performance of motor vehicles. This is easily done using a 12-volt electric engine with a small iron impeller. Along the way, the valve is replaced with a flap valve, which helps to facilitate start-up, increase traction and reduce fuel consumption.
The prepared engine is mounted in rigid clamps. They are pre-welded to the front of the homemade frame, then securely tightened with bolts (the whole process is well shown in the video).
Be sure to make sure that the clamps cover the neck of the output shaft of the diesel engine of the motoblock and hold it firmly.
A lever is attached to the manual gearbox of the homemade device, which is easy to make from an iron bar by welding a ball at the end. The length of the handle is left such that, being behind the control levers of a walk-behind tractor or a cultivator, you can easily reach it.
Next, an air-purifying filter is assembled for home-made use of available materials, for example, a tin can, a metal tube. Then prepare the fuel tank of a home-made motor unit. You can make it yourself from any sealed container or take it from a broken motorized wheelchair.
For a home-made diesel walk-behind tractor, however, like a motor cultivator, you will need chains, sprockets, a transition shaft. They are mainly borrowed from decommissioned motorcycle, auto, agricultural machinery. Hubs of stars are not difficult to do by yourself using pieces of iron and a lathe, since it’s easy to find a detailed drawing or video on the Internet on this topic. Ready gearbox for homemade take from any model of a moped. In the preparation of a homemade gearbox, steel plates and cylindrical disks with teeth are used.
The kinematic scheme of homemade work is created as simple as possible to ensure greater reliability of the functioning of its mechanisms. The transmission of torque from the engine to the countershaft is arranged by means of a standard roller chain with drive and driven sprockets. At the same time increase the gear ratio of the intermediate and reduce the speed of the output shaft.
Sometimes the so-called creeper reducer is included in the transmission of a walk-behind tractor or a cultivator. This is a reduction gear, which is necessary to obtain slow operating speeds (see how to assemble a creeper reducer in the video).
The installation of this device allows you to improve the management of homemade and make its operation safe for humans. The creeper is bought or assembled on their own. How to make a creeper yourself and what you need to do this, you can watch both the video and take an interest in the thematic forums organized by skilled technicians.
Wheels with a diameter of up to 10 inches, taken from decommissioned agricultural machines, and wheelchairs, are best suited to a diesel motoblock with a creeper, produced by oneself. Sometimes they take from passenger cars, if you need to increase the patency of homemade equipment. And when the walk-behind tractor is used on heavy soils, they are replaced with iron ones (how they prove themselves in business can be seen in the video).
When creating a home-made motor cultivator, a soil milling cutter is installed instead of wheels for the possibility of digging and loosening the soil. Thanks to the use of such a soil improver, there is no tamping of the soil on which the cultivator has recently passed.

In the manufacture of the axis of the cultivator homemade recommend using a monolithic piece of steel. A welded pipe will not work, as it may not withstand the load.
The work of a home-made walk-behind tractor or motor-cultivator, like any machine, needs to be controlled. The control devices of such homemade products are usually handles - they are attached directly to the frame of the frame. They are made of two thick-walled pipes that are bent to give a convenient shape (the video demonstrates this well).
At their ends, gas handles and clutches are installed, removed, for example, from an old moped.
The levers of the manual gearbox and the kick start of the cultivator are made of a metal bar with a diameter of 10 mm. Kickstarter on homemade take out back closer to the operator, thereby facilitating the start of the diesel engine. Also in a convenient place fasten the brake and gear levers.
In a self-propelled walk-behind tractor, instead of handles, you can make a convenient steering adapter. The car steering column with a bipod or removed from a tractor is ideally suited for this. In such a mechanism, the bipod acts as a hitch, combining the cart with a homemade product. In the assembly of the steering adapter, a ball bearing is used - it allows you to make the hitch independent. The whole process of preparing a makeshift hitch is best seen in the video.
Home-made walk-behind tractor or tiller complement all kinds of attachments. This is done in order to expand:
- application area,
- seasonality of work performed.
Thanks to the layout, you can use the homemade product in any season, even in winter, which allows you to use the equipment all year round. In addition to plowing and cultivation with attachments, they plow the land, plant and cultivate crops, dig up potatoes, as well as clean the territories and harvest hay.If, in addition to the walk-behind tractor, a towed trolley is made, it will also be able to carry out transport functions, helping to transport heavy, bulky loads. Due to the high cost of equipment for hanging, many try to make it with their own hands, using drawings, sketches, and author’s video.
Screen potato digger
Making a potato digger for homemade work begins with the preparation of the carriage body, welded from wire and thin rods. The sketch presented here will help to understand such a process (you can also use the video).

A shovel made of a steel sheet and repeating the shape of the potato digger body is installed on the axis of the homemade product in front of the carriage. Behind her welded twigs, slightly bent to the bottom.
For the manufacture of a plow, a high-strength alloyed or sheet steel with a thickness of at least 3 mm is used for the cultivator.
Fig. 5. Homemade plow
First, on the basis of the drawing, a pattern is prepared and transferred to cardboard, and then to metal, after which it is cut using a grinder. The plow share is recommended to be strengthened with high-strength metal, for example, from a circular saw. The blade and stand can first be done separately, and then joined together. This design is less vulnerable and in the event of a breakdown of any element, it will be easy to replace it.
To the finished walk-behind tractor, many try to make a home-made trailer or adapter equipped with a driver's seat.

The frame for such a trailer is made of pipes, corners of any section. For the wheel axle, a metal rod with a diameter of 30 mm is used. The body of a homemade device can be made from boards, corrugated board or a sheet of metal 1.2-1.5 mm thick. To increase the strength, the wooden trailer in the corners is reinforced with metal plates, and made of corrugated board - complement with stiffening ribs.
To begin with, we will find parts for the future home-made walk-behind tractor. Every motoblock mechanism is equipped with the following technical components:
- Control block,
- creeper (gear),
- aggregation system.
The motor is removed from an obsolete or faulty motorcycle. When choosing an engine, two-stroke engines are preferred, but this does not mean that four-stroke engines are not used to create a motoblock. A suitable option is a motor shot from an IZH PLANET motorcycle.
Transmission in motoblocks is used of several types:
- gear (standard tractor transmission),
- gear and worm,
- hydrostatic (new, expensive technical device that has recently appeared on the market).
The control unit consists of a set of levers switching speeds, a button that increases or decreases the fuel supply to the engine, and brakes.
It is required that the design be equipped with an aggregation system, which is an important structural element, connecting a home-made walk-behind tractor and do-it-yourself attachments created for it. Therefore, the bracket must be firmly attached to the supporting frame of the structure and is equipped with a power distribution device with increasing load on it.
Inexpensive device with great functionality
A home-made walk-behind tractor or a motor cultivator is an economical and very useful motor unit in the household. He is able to carry out all kinds of agricultural operations, thereby freeing a person from tedious physical labor. In the video below, you can see all the functionality of this miracle machine.
Such homemade products are applicable not only as an assistant in agricultural work. They are used with success when cleaning the local area, and in the winter time - to clear the snow. If you make a high-quality home-made walk-behind tractor or motor-cultivator, then the operational parameters of the home-made will be no worse than that of an expensive factory analogue.
DIY assembly of technical components will require special skills and an understanding of the fundamentals of mechanical engineering. Special equipment required:
- welding machine,
- angle grinder,
- key set
Among other things, bolts, nuts and screws are needed to mount the devices on the frame of the future walk-behind tractor.
How to make a walk-behind tractor using the example of a project from V. Arkhipov
Motoblock - a universal miracle machine that can automate most of the agrotechnical work on your site. With its help, they plow the soil, plant and dig potatoes, remove snow and even transport small loads (crops, fertilizers). Naturally, such an indispensable unit in the economy is sold in any agricultural center. And it’s not cheap. At the same time, its device is quite simple, not requiring special technical knowledge. Therefore, many self-taught masters decide to make a walk-behind tractor with their own hands.
Manufacturing a walk-behind tractor
Getting to the manufacture of walk-behind tractor:
- We assemble the frame: we use a welding machine, it is advisable to use solid metal. We make the structure stiff. The frame design consists of two side members, the rear ends must be bent upward, and the front ones fastened with welding. We attach a control unit with levers to the back. We connect the spars between each other with transverse slats. The front bar will play the role of a stand for the transmission and battery.
- The motor mount is made in the form of a slide, staples are welded to the sides, and a water pipe with a diameter of 42 mm is placed in the center. A transverse arc is attached to the middle of the formed slide, which has holes for mounting the engine and the base of the frame. A place is made in the front cross member of the frame for installing the tension chain, which ensures the operation of the gearbox.
- Installing the gearbox is an important element in the manufacture of a homemade walk-behind tractor. The gearbox converts torque energy to lower speeds. Typically, the gearbox is installed between the engine and the wheels. There are options for home-made walk-behind tractors, when the gearbox can be used not only to move the walk-behind tractor, but also for the operation of a drill, milling cutter, home-made air suspension, etc.
- We equip the engine with air cooling, use an electric motor rated for 12 volts.
- We put wheels not exceeding 10 inches. Spline cuts of the semi-axles transmit torque to the wheels. To improve the grip of the wheels with the ground, you can install a special bandage made of wire or chains - i.e. do lugs with your own hands.
- We install an exhaust system that remains unchanged. Despite the fact that it is possible to install exhaust from a motorcycle, you can make an exhaust with your own hands. You will need a pipe from which the pipe will be made, and silencing cans. The adapter between the pipe and the silencer must be made by a turner, it is impossible to make this attachment unit yourself.
- We are preparing a place for the fuel tank, which can be made with your own hands: any plastic canister with a capacity of at least 5 liters will do. A hole is made in the canister and a special hose is discharged through which fuel will be transported.
- We connect the units and components with each other and start the walk-behind tractor.
Using all the tips described above, you can independently assemble a walk-behind tractor in a fairly short time, using only improvised materials and spending a small amount of money.

How to make a walk-behind tractor? DIY step-by-step manufacturing of a walk-behind tractor
So, the process of assembling a walk-behind tractor consists of the following steps:
- Design, collection and preparation of materials and size drawings of the walk-behind tractor. The better the training will be, the less will have to deal with the alteration of their own mistakes.
- Assembly and welding of the supporting frame. Dimensions are calculated, depending on the main purpose, the frame accounts for the majority of the load, and welding should be performed with the utmost quality, and the pipe wall thickness should be at least 2 mm.
- Installation on the motor frame. An exhaust pipe and control knobs are attached to the motor, the layout of the elements is very important here, and the motor mount must be reliable enough.
- Preparing, installing and connecting the gearbox. This element provides the transmission of the driving force of the motor to the wheel drive, with a different layout, the force can be redistributed to the machine for digging the ground or cutter.
- Wheelbase installation. Typically, rubber wheels with a deep tread with a diameter of 30 cm are used for movement. In some models, the wheels are replaced with all-metal rims with a corrugated structure, which loosen and do not roll away the soil. Another version of the device of the walk-behind tractor is a caterpillar track with the installation of control rollers to the hubs and the basis for the tracks from old tires or belts.
- The engine is forced air cooled.
- The fuel tank is mounted and the supply hose to the motor is pulled.
- The lugs for the walk-behind tractor are installed.
- All elements are carefully fixed, protective covers are installed.
- The device is ready for a test run.
Previously, the device must be checked in idling and only after a few test starts, first connect the light and then the full load. During the test operation, it is important to monitor all extraneous noise and vibration and immediately eliminate the cause of their occurrence.
Tips of professionals how to make a walk-behind tractor
The ideal motor choice for a home-made motor-cultivator would be the engine from the Izh motorcycle or the Druzhba or Ural chainsaws, they are quite powerful and sometimes even require a reduction in effort.
One of the most thoughtful designs belongs to Valentin Arkhipov, schemes and video layouts of his various units and adapters to the walk-behind tractor are available on the Internet. Based on his developments, you can develop your own project for assembling a walk-behind tractor with your own hands.
For connecting various additional equipment and trailers, a swivel joint is best suited, it will give maneuverability to the overall design.
In order to better understand the dimensions and avoid skidding when moving under load when performing a walk-behind tractor, the plow is made with a displaced axis relative to the movement of the apparatus.
For automatic adjustment of the plowing depths of the plow, it is convenient to use a special adjustable rail, limiting and leveling the movement of the tool during plowing.
By installing an additional sprocket and transmitting the movement of the drive to the brush, you can successfully clear the area from leaves and snow.
Assembling a walk-behind tractor is not an easy task and requires skills. But there is nothing insuperable in this. Using a database of technical literature, and most importantly, tips from forums of lovers of homemade equipment, almost anyone can assemble an aggregate for country needs according to their desires and needs.
Home-made walk-behind tractor: DIY manufacturing
Land plots in villages and large summer cottages require enormous labor costs during plowing, hilling and cultivation. The task can be greatly facilitated with the help of a tractor, but its cost is prohibitively high for many small farmers and gardeners. An excellent solution in this case is the assembly of a homemade walk-behind tractor from a chainsaw or motorcycle.
DIY assembly instructions
If you are seriously thinking about cultivating any garden crops in your country house or near a private house, you will need a motor cultivator. This universal miracle machine can fully automate most of the agricultural activities on your site, allowing you to plow the soil, plant and dig potatoes, remove snow, and sometimes carry out the transportation of some goods, including crops and fertilizers.
It is no secret that such an indispensable device can be bought at any agricultural hypermarket, but its cost can be prohibitively high. Therefore, more and more often summer residents are trying to make a walk-behind tractor with their own hands. But in fact it does not require special efforts and skills, while the amount of expenses is reduced to a minimum.
What is a walk-behind tractor
A walk-behind tractor, or a motor cultivator, is a self-propelled two-wheeled unit that is equipped with an internal combustion engine. The device freely moves forward, and the summer resident goes behind him, holding on to the handles with various nodes and controls. Many available models have multiple gears for moving forward and backward.. To exploitation of such an invention It was the most productive, it is equipped with additional tools, including a plow, which allows plowing and cultivating the land.
The average mass of the walk-behind tractor reaches 100 kg, and the engine power often exceeds 8 horsepower. Due to such features, such a tool can become indispensable for plowing the garden area.
You should pay attention to the fact that all walk-behind tractors are equipped with a special drive for attachments, which allows you to transfer part of the motor power to a suspended mowing machine. Basically, such a universal mechanism allows you to cope with various agricultural work, including:
- plowing the land
- transportation of the crop (in this case, you need to get a small trailer),
- mowing grass.
With the help of such miniature trucks, residents of our regions transport firewood, fertilizers and crops. In winter, it can be used as a tool for snow removal. Even the weakest model pulls a load weighing up to 400 kg seamlessly.
Despite the many advantages, the excessive versatility of a walk-behind tractor is not necessary for every summer resident. Yes, and quite impressive weight sometimes complicates the operation of the device when performing daily tasks. Therefore, many owners of suburban areas prefer a simplified version in the form of a cultivator. Such a solution is characterized by affordable cost and low power consumption.
Most cultivators are much smaller motoblocks. Instead of the wheels, which are provided in the classic version, special milling cutters are installed here that are able to loosen and grind the earth when moving. They are the main working element of the cultivator. Unfortunately, it is impossible to use additional equipment operating from the power plant of this device. This is due to the lack of an appropriate drive.
Among the possible "snap" only "passive" tools, such as:
The weight of the cultivator does not exceed 50 kg, while on the market you can find many powerful models weighing up to 20 kg. Due to these characteristics, the car is very easy to hold with your hands, and fuel consumption remains at a minimum level. By the way, some products are equipped with an electric motor.
The cost of cultivators differs significantly from the cost of walk-behind tractors. A relatively low-power and inexpensive walk-behind tractor with a capacity of 6 horsepower will cost twice as much as a cultivator with similar performance indicators.
The advantage of the walk-behind tractor is not only in its low cost, but also in increased maneuverability, which allows you to work in areas where the tractor simply can’t pass in size. With it, you can process plots of only one square meter.
Depending on the installed additional equipment, the walk-behind tractor is used to carry out various types of work on a land plot. Light models are usually equipped with a weeding tool and a mill. Heavier specimens can already be used for plowing, hilling and mowing.
On a heavy walk-behind tractor installation of the following devices is allowed:
- milling cutter
- snow blower.
With this device, if you add a seat and a trailer to it, you can transport various loads weighing up to 300 kg over short distances. It is actively used for planting and harvesting potatoes and other crops. Motoblock acts as an indispensable assistant in cleaning large areas of snow, drilling and fertilizing the soil.
Despite the fact that the cost of such an apparatus is many times less than a full-fledged tractor, not every summer resident or villager can afford to buy a factory-assembled walk-behind tractor. Prices for branded products range from 30 to 200 thousand rubles. The cheapest are Chinese-made units, the reliability of which is extremely doubtful.
DIY assembly of a do-it-yourself walk-behind tractor is a profitable option. The required costs, in the presence of most spare parts, which are usually always available on personal farms, will be minimal, and the quality is no worse than the factory one.
Before starting assembly work, you should determine what rated power will be on the homemade walk-behind tractor. The best option is to use the IZH Planet 5 motorcycle or a powerful chainsaw, for example, the Urals, as a donor of spare parts. But you can use any similar engines.
To build a homemade walk-behind tractor you will need:
- welding machine,
- set of tools,
- steel pipes,
- wheels from a car or sheet metal,
- donor (motorcycle or chainsaw).
During the work, additional details will be required to connect the engine and frame. Attached equipment can be used factory or also made independently from improvised means.
Since in each specific case the design of the unit may differ depending on the used parts and engine, before starting the assembly, you need to draw up a work plan and make the necessary design drawings, based on the operation manual of the factory motoblock.
General principles and the procedure for the manufacture of the supporting structure is as follows:
- Metal pipes are connected in the form of two spars with upward curved edges.
- A motorcycle wheel is welded to these edges. With its help, the motoblock will be controlled.
- Transverse steel amplifiers are welded to the side members. They will serve as a support for the transmission and engine.
- A metal plate is welded from the rear edge of the structure onto which the battery will be mounted.
In addition, you can use the finished motorcycle frame, slightly modifying it. You will need to remove the front fork and all parts that interfere with the installation of new equipment. A hitch mount should be welded behind it.
With this option, the wheels from the car are usually immediately installed, adding an axis from a solid round timber to the structure.
Creation of the power unit
Regardless of whether the motorcycle engine is installed on a walk-behind tractor, from a scooter or chainsaw, they must all have active air cooling. To facilitate starting, it is necessary to change the power supply system by replacing the fuel supply valve with a flap.
Muffler use motorcycle or make it yourself from a pipe with a diameter of 70 mm. To do this, cut a small part about 25 cm long from it, fill it with sawdust and shavings. The outlet must be narrowed in half.
The silencer should be located in such a way as to fully ensure exhaust gas to the side of the person who will control the walk-behind tractor. For the engine, a separate steel structure is assembled from pipes with a diameter of 42 mm. Outwardly, it should resemble a slide with brackets having holes for bolts, with which it is attached to the main frame.
In addition to the wheels, engine and frame, the multifunctional walk-behind tractor must be equipped with additional units, without which it is impossible to perform a number of basic tasks, and its use will be limited simple transportation of goods.
Stroke reducer - a gearbox element that makes it possible to operate the unit at the smallest speed. In factory models, the stroke reducer is installed on the gearbox, respectively, this must be done on a makeshift walk-behind tractor. When planting or picking potatoes, sowing or plowing the land, the power plant requires maximum power at the lowest speed. To achieve this effect without installing this node will fail.
A gearbox is a mechanism that provides the transmission of engine torque to individual nodes that drive the walk-behind tractor. Install it between the wheels of the unit and the engine.
When working with some additional equipment, the transmission of torque occurs directly to it. If a drill, milling cutter, snow blower or tracks are installed, the gearbox starts working directly with them. Without appropriate experience and knowledge, you should not try to assemble and install this unit yourself: it is better to purchase it in a store or remove it from old equipment.
